Cross, Engineer Village of Cayuga Heights MARCHAM HALL 836 HANSHAW ROAD ITHACA, NEW YORK 14850 (607) 257-1238 fax (607) 257-4910 Zoning Board of Appeals Fence Variance Questionnaire 1) How wide is the official road right of way along (or near) which the fence is proposed? (Some Village road right of ways are wider than others, and wider right of ways are likely to be safer. Most Village road right of ways are 50' wide.) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 2) How wide and open is the effective buffer between the proposed fence and the nearest sidewalk or roadway? (Deer require some room to go around a fence, so if the sidewalk or road is close to the fence, the deer will use them.) _________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ 3) Are there any deer fences/barriers already in place on adjoining lots or across the street? (Within the setback or without - anything deer would have to go around. The more fences etc. there are in the area, the more problematic additional fences might be.) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 4) How much land (if any) will the proposed fenced area enclose in total? (Since deer will try harder to get into larger enclosures.) If the fence is for privacy and encloses nothing, is there anything attractive to deer behind the fence? _____________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 5) Is there a visible deer trail through any portion of the property where the fence will be located? (We assume there must be some deer pressure on any lot where a deer fence is requested, but we're looking for evidence of more significant deer migration that might be redirected into the road right of way or neighboring lands with greater than average potential consequences for pedestrian or vehicular safety.) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 6) How long and how tall is the proposed fence, and how large (if any) is the gap between the base of the fence and the ground? (If there's more than about 1.5' open at the base of the fence, it's not a deer fence, as deer prefer to go under fences rather than over them. We can ignore some deer-related issues for fences that are shorter than about 5' or have significant gaps on the bottom.) ___________________________________________________________________________________________
