Danby Conservation Advisory Council
Minutes of Regular Meeting January 26, 2015

The Meeting was opened at 7:20 pm
Public Comments/Privilege of the floor
None
Discussion
New Members
Jenny Caldwell introduced herself. Jenny is the new member of the council. Her appointment has
been confirmed by the Town Board. Jenny is a farmer. Preserving Danby’s land is important to her, as well
as helping create an agriculture renaissance in the town.
Don Schaufler sat in. Don is a forester. He was the Forest Manager for the Arnot Forest.
Joel discussed the CAC mission and vision.
Current Easements
Matt talked to the Palmers. They are getting their land appraised. They asked for help with getting the
easement done. There was a discussion of easement process, especially the appraisal of the land and the tax
reasons for doing easement.
Action Item: Matt will work with Palmers to finish things up. Matt will contact Ted Melchen again,
too.
Open Space Inventory
Jake could not come to tonight meeting to discuss the OSI tool that he created. He suggested that we
create a list of needs and desires for easements before he comes in to demonstrate the tool. Joel discussed
land use and characteristics in the town and county. Jenny suggested coming up with characteristics of
property and landowner and characteristics of surrounding land.
Action Item: We will come up with a list.
Easements Moving Forward
How to get more people involved? Provide regular input to the Danby News. Mary: some kind of
event, discussion and food. Kayaking on the pond with a BBQ. Moth event with Bill Evans. Hike and tree
and plant identification walks. Jenny discussed an easement handbook. Mary and Jenny will work on a
creating.
Joel asked if we had copies of the easement documents. Matt will send to CAC members.

480A DEC Rules
Don brought up changes to NY DEC 480-a Forest Rules that may be beneficial to use of lands for
woodlots. The rewrite is in process. Joel asked if we could provide input.
Minutes
Approval was deferred to next meeting when we have more time and Dan is here.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 8:36 PM.
The next meeting is on February 23, 2015 at 7:00PM.
