Monthly Report – September, 2011
September was an extremely busy month for the department with 56 alarms. We had 27
calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 24 in the Town of Ithaca and 5 mutual aid
requests. We had 31 EMS calls and 25 fire calls. In the middle of the month we had
multiple alarms for activated fire alarms at sorority houses in the district. After the third
such alarm for the day we determined that a local alarm service company had been
moving the alarms in the houses to a third party vendor and we were getting transmission
errors. This may continue to happen as the county stops monitoring fire alarm systems
and they move to third party vendors. Late in the month we were requested to respond to
the mall for a tractor trailer fire. This was a mutual aid request from the Lansing Fire
Department. E202 and a full crew responded immediately after the activation and arrived
to find a fully involved truck fire. The truck was backed into the loading dock at the Best
Buy store and was so heavily involved that it threatened to extend into the mall. Hose
lines were pulled and the fire was quickly brought under control. The crew on E202
performed superbly and this was an example of how training pays off. The fire was out
with 2 minutes of our arrival on the scene.
September was a big month for training. We have everybody back in the fold and picked
up the pace through the month to get everybody back on track. Six of our probationary
members worked though the month to complete checklist work. We started with ten in
the spring and six made it through the process. Five of the six are currently enrolled in
the Firefighter 1 class. The sixth had already taken the Scene Support Class in the spring
and is currently enrolled in the Basic EMT class at TC3. We have a total of five
members in the EMT class at TC3. We are ready to start our fall program in late
October. We are participating in the airport’s disaster drill in on October 15th. In
preparation for the drill we went to the airport in mid-September and did a walkthrough
of the Crash Fire Rescue equipment and apparatus and they provided us training on their
procedures. Mid-month we did mask confidence training. At this training the firefighters
are taught to special techniques to make the air in their packs last as long as possible.
This training stresses physical fitness and breathing control. Our final training of the
month was on large area search. Residential structures are relatively easy to search.
Houses have small rooms and can be searched quickly by several firefighters. Large
areas such as schools, movie theaters, churches, factories etc. are more difficult because
to search them well you have to come away from the wall and deal with unexpected
obstacles. Once the team loses contact with the wall it is very easy to become
disoriented. This training reinforced searching with ropes and how to stay oriented.
Our new recruits will start training in late October. We had our informational dinner in
late September and interviewed 21 candidates. We had determined that our optimal class
size would be 10 new recruits. After the interviews we decided to accept 11 of t he 21.
Those who did not make the cut either lived out of the district, were only going to be here
for one year or were only joining the department to get their EMT class paid for. The 11
who made it through seem very motivated. Several of them are already EMTs and right
after they were voted into the department on October 2nd asked to start their rescue
checklists. As always we have high hopes for this group.
We upgraded the wireless access at the fire station in September. We had spots in the
station that were not covered very well. The fire company and Fire Council split the cost
to make the wireless access more robust throughout the station. We ordered 4 sets of
turnout gear for some of our members. We have been having some small maintenance
issues with E202 but KME has been very responsive to our requests for service.
The Annual Open House will be on October 8th this year. We have been extremely busy
with training, public education and calls this fall but the attitude at the fire station is very
positive. It seems the busier it gets the happier firefighters are.
