We are 100 calls over where we were at the end of April last year! There were 45 calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 17 in the Town of Ithaca and 7 mutual aid requests. We had 38 EMS calls and 31 fire calls. The increased number of calls can be attributed mainly to the weather that we had through the month of April. The severe storms that have gone through the area recently have caused many trees to come down in the roadways of the village. The department responds to these calls and if the tree is completely blocking the roadway we determine if power lines are involved or not and then make a determination if it is safe for us to remove the tree from the roadway. If there are power lines involved , we will block traffic at the scene and wait for NYSEG to come and secure the power before we remove the downed tree. If there are no lines involved we then determine if it is safe for us to work and if it is we use saws to cut the trees into manageable size and open the roads. If the tree is to large or not blocking a major roadway we will call the police department and have them contact DPW personnel to come remove the tree. There were also many calls for water problems in homes. We have large gas powered pumps and small electric powered sump pumps that we use to help remove the water. It was extremely busy but we still managed to average 12 firefighters per call. Morale is high. We did some great training in April. We held the final two spring recruit classes in early April. The recruits are working through their checklists. Many of them are working hard to get through them by the end of May when some of them leave for the summer. We held training at the station with Bangs Ambulance. We had an ambulance at the station and went over the history of EMS in this county and then we practiced stretcher operations and showed how to set up equipment in the ambulance to be able to assist at scenes when the ambulance crew needs extra hands. We held a CPR original class for members who needed a CPR card. All firefighters in the department are required to maintain CPR certification. There was a follow up to the forcible entry training given last month. Last month we concentrated on locks and how to get through them, this month we practiced on using power tools to get into building if needed. Our pancake breakfast was a great success in late April. There was a steady stream all morning long at the serving table. The local Brownie troop was on hand to help out for the morning. The troop had been saving their dues money for Japanese Tsunami Relief and at the breakfast we put out a boot for donations. The generosity of those who attended the breakfast raised $300 for the troop for their project. The girls had a great time helping out and the firefighters had fun working with them. It was very nice to see so many people from the community sitting at the tables talking and enjoying being at the fire station. We have an inspection trip set up on May 10th to look over the new truck. We will be heading to the KME plant for the day. This will serve as the final inspection and the truck is scheduled to be delivered around the week of May 16th. We will take all of the tools and equipment to be installed on the truck with us for the inspection trip. KME will install the tools and radios at the factory. This will allow us to get the truck in service as soon as we take delivery. We have tentatively scheduled training on the new truck for May 23rd/24th. We will do training Monday evening and then Tuesday during the day and then again in the evening. Every driver in the department will be required to attend the training and we are encouraging all members to attend the training so they become familiar with the truck. Our annual yard sale will be on the weekend of May 21st and 22nd. We are already getting donations dropped of at the station. The official start of yard sale drop offs and pick ups is the week of May 16th. Everybody at the station is gearing up for this event. This is a busy week for the department with pick ups going on all week long and then organizing all of the donations. Keeping things organized is a major job but everybody seems to smile through it and work hard. The day after the yard sale we are going to move all of the furniture out of the first floor of the station into the truck bays and the floors will be professionally stripped and waxed. It has been a couple of years since we last did this and the floors could use the attention. All of the bay doors were serviced for the first time ever in April. They all seem to be working much better since being serviced. Morale is great at the station. It seems the busier we are the better everybody feels. Sincerely, George Tamborelle Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent EMERGENCY CALLS: 69 TOTAL CALLS YEAR TO DATE: 238 Total Calls – 69 Fire Calls – 31 EMS Calls - 38 Total Mutual Aid – 7 Calls in the Village – 45 Calls in the Town – 17 TRAINING / MEETINGS / EVENTS: 4/3 – Annual Elections 4/6 – Vehicle Extrication 4/9 – Recruit Training 4/13 – Forcible Entry 4/16 – Recruit Training 4/23 – Annual Installation Banquet 4/26 – EMS Training – Bangs Ambulance Orientation 4/30 – Pancake Breakfast UPCOMING EVENTS: 5/4 – Fire Training – Live Burn 5/10 – Truck Inspection 5/18 – Fire Training – Radio Operations 5/21-22 – Yard Sale 5/23-24 – Training on New Truck
