Labor Grade Approved Revised 04/11 By AF, Commissioner of Personnel * Approved NC PT per NYS CSC 1/22/74 DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is important inspection work involving responsibility for determining compliance with the requirements of the Multiple Residence law and Fire Codes of New York State. A Fire Inspector is responsible for inspecting multiple dwellings (three units or more) and non-residential buildings (including public assembly space) to determine compliance with the Multiple Residence law. The Inspector must pay close attention to detail, since errors in judgment have the potential to endanger lives and property. The work is performed under the general direction of the Mayor and/or Village Engineer with wide latitude allowed for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision of others is generally not a function of this class. The incumbent will perform all related duties as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Examines and inspects buildings and property to determine compliance with the provisions of the Multiple Residence Law; Inspects new construction and alterations for compliance with the Law; Inspects commercial properties for fire hazards, building and general house -keeping safety; Investigates complaints and assists in processing violations of the Multiple Residence Law; Assists in the review of plans and specifications for new construction for compliance with fire prevention ordinances; Makes written reports of violations to a superior and to property owners; Maintains records and prepares reports of inspection activities; The successful candidate is required to maintain a current knowledge of the field by participating in on- going mandated training as required by the NYS Department of State Codes Division. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the Multiple Residence Law; Good knowledge of State, municipal and related building or fire prevention codes; Ability to establish cooperative relationships with public officials, building contractors and the general public; Ability to read, interpret plans and specifications; Courtesy, tack, good powers of observation and good judgment are all required attributes. The employee’s physical condition shall be commensurate with the demands of this position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma AND at least two years of full- time paid (or the equivalent part-time and/or volunteer) experience as a fireman or in the performance of building code inspections or some other type of officially sanctioned inspection work.
