Monthly Report – June, 2011
June was another steady month for the fire department with a total of 43 calls. We had
34 calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 6 in the Town of Ithaca and 3 mutual aid
requests. We had 30 EMS calls and 14 fire calls. Early in the month we responded to a
fraternity house with an activated carbon monoxide detector. Many times when we
respond to carbon monoxide detector activations we find that the batteries are low
causing the alarm to activate. This time crews found CO levels in excess of 300 ppm (35
ppm is considered dangerous). We ensured that all residents were out of the house and
determined with a gas detector that there was a problem with the hot water heater. We
contacted NYSEG and they responded to the scene to take care of the problem. Late in
the month we assisted the Lansing Fire Department with a tractor trailer fire on RT 13.
CHFD units were the first to arrive and found the engine compartment of the tractor fully
involved. As our firefighters stretched the hand line for the attack on the fire one of our
guys looked at Asst Chief Matt Abbinanti and shouted “that truck is carrying paper
products, it could get bad” to which Matt calmly replied “then I suggest you put it out
before it gets that far”. We quickly extinguished the fire.
For the beginning of the summer we had an excellent month of training. We got back to
the basics for the month. We started out with training on Ladders/Hoses and Axes,
followed that up with victim drags and carries and then moved onto hose movement the
next week. These are main tools and tasks of our trade and getting back to the basics
helps refresh our minds that power tools and high tech is not always the best way to go in
certain situations. Since we often assist our neighboring departments with brush fires in
the summer we did training on Wild Land Firefighting late in the month. This class was
taught by Asst. Chief Dave Openshaw. Dave went to college in Colorado and spent his
summer months as a sawyer on a wild land firefighting task force. He has a lot of
experience in this field. Our final training of the month was on Helicopter Ground
Operations. Guthrie One brought a helicopter to the station and we had a class on
Landing Zone Operations. We opened this training up to all county departments and it
was well attended.
We continue to move through our summer scheduled equipment maintenance at the
station. E202 went out for some warranty work in June and is now back. E203 will be
going to have pump testing done in late July. Hose testing is scheduled for early July and
air pack testing for early August.
We look forward to a safe summer and are planning for the fall recruit class.
