HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Chief Report.pdf September 9, 2015 Honorable Kate Supron Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report – January, 2011 2011 started out very busy with 58 calls for the month. We had 38 calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 14 in the Town of Ithaca and 6 mutual aid requests. We had 38 EMS calls and 20 fire calls. It was a pretty routine month for the department. We did not do many organized trainings through the month of January because of the winter break but we did to countless hours of checklist work with the probationary members. Many of the probies came back to Ithaca early to work on checklists. This process needs to be done by February 13th in order for them to remain in the department. We have been very pleased with their progress and foresee all but two of them finishing. Most of those from the fall class are taking the Firefighter 1 class starting in February. We had our annual OSHA/Blood borne Pathogens/CPR recertification training on January 29th. We had 42 members attend this required training day. We started early in the day and at the half way point we all went to the climbing wall at Cornell for 2 hours of rock climbing. This was a great team building exercise and broke up the day nicely. We are starting our spring recruit drive in February. We are planning on a class of less then 10 new members. This will allow us to work closely with a smaller class to get them through much of their training before the end of May. In January we started to have major problems with the treadmill and elliptical in the gym at the station. It was determined that the treadmill would require a major overhaul to get it running again and the elliptical was not far behind. At the January meeting of the fire company it was decided to replace both pieces of equipment. We contacted Advantage Sport and Fitness and purchased the equipment at a cost of nearly 11K. This project was completely funded by the fire company. Looking forward to the spring we are getting ready to start the planning for the yard sale. The date we are looking at is May 21st this year. A representative of the fire company will be attending the March Board of Trustees meeting to request permission to hold this event again. We are also planning to hold a pancake breakfast at the station some time in April. This would be a free pancake breakfast open to the public. Every couple of years we have one of these events. It allows us to open the station to the public in the spring. Things at the fire station seem to going well. We recently had some cleaning done on the hoods in the kitchen. They were cleaned and inspected by a company out of Syracuse. We had some plumbing work done in the truck bays on our wall mounted hose reels. One was leaking and we had it replumbed and that seemed to fix the problem and the other reel we replaced completely. All of our apparatus is in good working order. We did order five more sets of turnout gear. This new gear will go to recent graduates of the Fall Firefighter 1 class and their gear will go to the new members in the spring recruit class. The current plan is to replace another five sets in June. We currently stand at 48 active members of the department. This is a great number to be at. This year we will lose six members when they graduate from Cornell. We will fill those ranks with members from the spring class. Assistant Chief Matt Abbinanti has had a change of plans and will stay in the area and with the department after graduation this year. This is good news for the department.
