This brings our total for 2011 to 169 calls. We had 41 calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 15 in the Town of Ithaca and 3 mutual aid requests. We had 31 EMS calls and 28 fire calls. We had a large variety of call for in the month of March. We had a steady stream of EMS calls for the month but the fire calls varied. Early in the month we were called to Lansing to assist at a structure fire with a person trapped. Our crews responded quickly and assisted Lansing with search, suppression and overhaul at the scene. Unfortunately there was a civilian fatality as a result of the fire. With the severe weather throughout the month we helped many home owners in our district with flooding problems. In the middle of the month we responded to a fire alarm activation at Northeast Elementary School. We arrived on scene to find a smoke condition in one wing of the school. We discovered that a teacher had been warming up lunch in a microwave and set the time for 20 minutes instead of 2 and melted the container. No fire was found and we opened some windows and doors to get the smell out of the classroom. All in all it was an interesting month for the department. March was a slow month for trainings. We had a burn training scheduled for early in the month that got cancelled because we were unable to get into the training center after the blizzard. We did our first Spring Recruit Class on March 12th. This was an all day training on a Saturday. The recruits got their orientation to the department in the morning. The afternoon was dedicated to issuing gear and then going over basic skills. At the end of the month we had an exercise consultant come in to talk about the benefits of exercise and cardio health. I still maintain that we have the most fit firefighters in the area. On April 26th we are having a CPR original class at the station starting at 1700. If there are any village trustees or employees interested in taking this class please contact me. We have three bunkers leaving at the end of the school year. We had four applicants for the three positions. The new bunkers were chosen on experience and length of time in the department. Adam Breslin, interior firefighter and paramedic, Cullen Harwood, interior firefighter, and Herman Yang EMT will be the new bunkers. This will give us 6 interior firefighters, 2 paramedics and 2 EMTs, and 3 heavy apparatus drivers living at the station. We also have 2 members who have requested positions as summer bunkers. This will give us an amazing amount of coverage through the summer months. We have several events coming up in April. Department elections took place on April 3rd. The slate of officers will be sworn in at the Annual Installation Banquet on April 23 rd at the Country Club of Ithaca. We are also having a pancake breakfast at the station on April 30th starting at 0830. This is a free breakfast open to residents of the district. A local Brownie Troop will be assisting with the breakfast. KME has pushed back the delivery date of the new truck to the 2 nd week in May. This is not an issue for us at this point as we still have E202 in service. We will not release the old truck until we take delivery of the new one. As soon as the new truck is delivered to the station we will have the KME engineers in to train our members on the apparatus. We will do driver and pump training to get all or our current operators certified to pump and drive the truck. We are now looking at an inspection trip to the plant the last week in April or first week in May. We have already been getting calls from people wanting to drop off things for our annual yard sale. This has become one of the major highlights of our year. It not only brings the community to the fire station for the weekend but also serves as a great team building experience for the members of the department. We all work furiously for the two weeks prior to the sale to get everything together. The yard sale always seems to be the time that the new members of the department really get comfortable. Everything seems to be going well at the station. We have some small projects that we are working on. We are still clearing out some of the storage rooms and are getting ready to hang shelving and put in file cabinets. After the yard sale we will have the floors at the station professionally redone as we do every year. In March we also replaced the exercise bike in the gym. We replaced the recumbent bike with an upright exercise bike that has a screen and hooks to the internet. The rider can keep track of previous sessions as well as being able to ride against anybody else on line at the same time. The only way you realize its exercise is from the sweat and pain! Sincerely, George Tamborelle Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent EMERGENCY CALLS: 59 TOTAL CALLS YEAR TO DATE: 169 Total Calls – 59 Fire Calls – 28 EMS Calls - 31 Total Mutual Aid – 3 Calls in the Village – 41 Calls in the Town – 15 TRAINING / MEETINGS / EVENTS: 3/10 – Fire Training – Cancelled due to weather 3/12 – Recruit Training 3/29 – EMS Training – Physical Fitness Lecture UPCOMING EVENTS: 4/3 – Annual Elections 4/6 – Vehicle Extrication 4/9 – Recruit Training 4/13 – Forcible Entry 4/16 – Recruit Training 4/23 – Annual Installation Banquet 4/26 – EMS Training – Bangs Ambulance Orientation 4/30 – Pancake Breakfast
