DEVELOPMENT WITH THE EARTH IN MIND:
The Compelling Need for Sustainable Community Development and Environmental Protection

Sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting the needs of humankind today while safeguarding
the natural resources and ecosystem services upon which the economy and society depend. It ties together
concern for the carrying capacity of nature with the social, political, and economic challenges faced by humanity.
Despite the long-term discussion of sustainable development principles, most political leaders have felt compelled
to prioritize economic growth models over more sustainable alternatives.
Presenters:
David West, Senior Planner – Housing, TC Department of Planning and Sustainability
Where we build and how we shape new development at the neighborhood and regional scale is at least as
important as how we build individual buildings. David will discuss the demand for housing and the importance of
thinking regionally and globally when deciding how to reduce GHG emissions – specifically, the huge portion of
GHGs that come from transportation.
Brent Katzman, Associate Broker, Office Manager, Warren Real Estate
Is "green development" sustainable? In our need to move to zero carbon buildings and infrastructure quickly, the
challenge lies in doing so without exacerbating the already high cost of housing. Using current market data and
local examples, Brent will discuss the challenges facing both buyers and developers in the growth of sustainable
home ownership in our community.
Nick Goldsmith, Sustainability Coordinator for the City and Town of Ithaca
Nick will discuss the City's Green New Deal, providing an overview of the goals, what's happening right now, and

Noah Demarest: Principal, STREAM Collaborative
Designing for longevity isn’t easy. Navigating the regulatory approvals process, achieving net zero energy, making
the financials work, and creating something beautiful that people will appreciate for the long haul just might be
impossible, but it's exactly what Noah and his colleagues at STREAM strive to do. He’ll share recent projects and
highlight some successes and failures in the pursuit of sustainable development in Ithaca.
Lauren Gabuzzi, Transportation Demand Management Outreach Manager, Downtown Ithaca Alliance
How we create and incorporate transportation requirements in building code can play a substantial role in
developing environmentally friendly cities. Lauren will lead a discussion on Transportation Management
Associations and how they govern to ensure buildings are built with a green transportation focus.
George Franz, Associate Professor, City and Regional Planning, Cornell University
George will talk about the new “Sponge City” initiative in China, which calls for massive investment in green
infrastructure to address urban stormwater runoff and urban runoff pollutants through retention of runoff within the
city, through infiltration.
