THE GREEN NEW DEAL: Pathway to Ecological Sustainability? Distributing Our Resources More Equitably While Preserving the Earth’s Biocapacity for Future Generations Please join the Environmental Management Council (EMC) for our semi-annual update, presentations by local contributors, and a reception on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, 5:00 p.m., in the Tompkins County Public Library Borg Warner Room. The free public program will take place 5:00-6:30 pm, followed by light refreshments and mingling until 7:00 pm. After brief updates on the activities of EMC Committees, the main program will include the following: Introduction Overview of the Main Carbon/Climate Action Green New Deal Proposals Developed by Governor Cuomo and Congressional Representatives -- Guillermo Metz, Energy Team Leader at CCE of Tompkins County Panel Discussion Michael Hoffmann Executive Director of the Cornell Institute for Climate Smart Solutions and Co-chair of the President’s Sustainable Campus Committee at Cornell, which fosters climate change literacy across the campus. David Kay Senior Extension Associate with the Community and Regional Development Institute with a background in New York State’s “Smart Growth Policies.” Francis Vanek Senior Lecturer and Research Associate in Cornell's School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Adviser to the Engineers for a Sustainable World Program. Question and Answers Focusing on local priorities for establishing a more resilient community • With 3 degrees of warming already baked into our atmosphere, should we begin to shift our attention from mitigation efforts and invest more in deep adaption strategies? • Does the Green New Deal anticipate technology fixes and an expanded economy to achieve our goals? How do we avoid overproduction, excess consumption, waste, and more pollution? • How do we achieve a sustainable prosperity to meet everyone’s needs without exceeding the Earth’s capacity to provide us all with adequate sustenance, shelter, and security?
