There's a lot of great Earth-centric activities happening in and around Ulysses this weekend, and I hope you find time to join in the fun! Check out other information in the newsletter about how to participate. I'm looking forward to attending playground clean up with the Trumansburg Community Nursery School and learning more about trees and other sustainable activities at the Farmer's Market at the Tru-Uly Earth Care Day_(10am-2pm)_ Next Tuesday is our regularly scheduled Town Board meeting at 7pm, and, like always, the materials and link to join remotely are available here. Members of the public are always welcome to attend in person or remotely, and our meeting recordings are available afterwards on YouTube. Among many activities to be discussed, the Town Board will be continuing our discussion of the potential consolidation of our Town Justice Court down to one position, largely due to declining revenue, declining workload, and increasing costs. We have information posted about this here. If court consolidation is approved, it would not take effect until January 1, 2025. Additionally, the Town Board has narrowed down the use of our share of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to six potential projects. A lot of information about the costs and details of those projects are also available on the meeting page. TRU-ULY EARTH CARE DAY-SATURDAY, 4 20: Earth Care Day will take place on Sat., April 20 from 10-2pm at the Farmers Market area on the corner or Routes 96 and 227. The event will include trash pick-up, electric vehicles, crafting no-mow signs, hands-on activities, earth care information, music, food &free coffee! It will take place "rain or shine" and gloves, vests, trash bags, and pickers will be available for the clean-up portion of the event. All activities will be outside so sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing is recommended. For more information, link to the Facebook event. Town of Ulysses staff and committee members as well as students enrolled in the Youth Civics Internship program will have a booth at the Farmer's Market to share information and get community feedback for the Comprehensive Plan. Takin Care of T'burg will also be at the event, giving away the old, much-loved, cedar planter boxes from Main Street, as well as showcasing the new cedar boxes that will grace Main Street this season. They will also have their new electric watering cart with its 60-gallon water tank. SEEKING LOCAL FLOODING PHOTOS: Do you have photos from flooding events within the Town? We are looking for specific areas (listed below) but would appreciate any photos for possible future use. 1. FREE WELL TESTING- Deadline to apply 4/22: Is your main source of drinking water a well? Are you concerned about potential contaminants? The NYS Department of Health (DOH) is assisting the New York Rural Water Association (NYRWA) and the Ulysses Water Source Protection Plan Committee in developing a Source Water Protection Plan for the Town. In support of this, the DOH will be doing a limited number of well tests for a suite of water quality parameters. We need volunteers who are Ulysses residents not connected to municipal water to have their well tested (no charge to the homeowner). Interested in participating? Please send your name, address, and preferred email contact to private.wells@ health.nygov by April 22. The DOH will be scheduling a limited number of tests, over the course of 2- 3 days in early-to-mid May. The goal is a good representative sampling of drinking water wells Town-wide. Unfortunately, although we appreciate all who volunteer to participate, not everyone will be able to, due to limited resources. Ideal sampling locations will allow access inside the house. Homeowners will receive a report and explanation of the results. Individual household results will remain confidential with the DOH. The Town will receive a summary report of the findings without any location identifier. This data helps the Town and NYS to understand potential health concerns that may be present in drinking water wells and to focus on developing solutions in Ulysses. LIBRARY BOOKSALE: Ulysses Philomathic Library's annual Spring Book Sale has begun and will run through April 21. Visit the library website for hours and information. JACKSONVILLE COMMUNITY PARK CLEAN-UP: The JCA will host its annual spring clean up on Saturday, 4/27 from 9am-1pm. Food and coffee will be provided. Bring your own tool. ULYSSES COMPREHENSIVE PLAN UPDATES: Springtime Photo Contest: The Town of Ulysses' Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee is conducting a photography competition as part of the Town's Comp Plan update. Each quarter we're requesting community members take photos of the Town that you feel best captures the spirit of our community during that season and submit them to the Committee. Selected photos will be incorporated into the adopted Comp Plan with credits given to the photographer. This season's competition is Spring! The Committee will accept photos that capture the essence of spring in the Town from March 19 to June 19, 2024. Open burning is prohibited during this time EXCEPT FOR: • Camp fires or any other outdoor fires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter • Small cooking fires • Ceremonial or celebratory bonfires • Small fires for the disposal of flags or religious items Only charcoal or dry, clean, untreated or unpainted wood can be burned. Fires cannot be left unattended and must be fully extinguished.
