IN THIS WEEK'S ULYSSES NEWSLETTER: Upcoming Town Meetings Earth Care Day Well Testing Opportunity Library Booksale Mentored Hunting Spring Bird Migration Photography Contest "I Voted" Sticker Contest Shooting Sports Classes MEETINGS: • Planning Board 4/16 at 7pm • Board of Zoning Appeals 4/17- CANCELLED due to no appeals filed • Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee (CPSC) 4/18 at 3:45pm TRU-ULY EARTH CARE DAY EVENTS-4/20: Earth Care Day is scheduled for Sat., April 20 from 10-2pm at the Farmers Market in the Village of Trumansburg. The event will feature trash pick-up, electric vehicles, no-mow signs, hands-on activities, earth care information, music, food & free coffee! It will take place "rain or shine" and gloves, vests, trash bags, and pickers will be available. All activities will be outside so sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing is recommended. For more information, link to the Facebook event. Town officials and students enrolled in the Youth Civics Internship program will have a booth at the Farmer's Market to share information and get community feedback for the Comprehensive Plan. Stop by and say hello! Get more information on the Comprehensive Plan update. Takin Care of T'burg will also be at the event, giving away the old, much-loved, cedar planter boxes from Main Street, as well as showcasing the new cedar boxes that will grace Main Street this season. They will also have their new electric watering cart with its 60 gallon water tank. FREE WELL TESTING: Is your main source of drinking water a well? Are you concerned about potential contaminants? The NYS Department of Health (DOH) is assisting the New York Rural Water Association (NYRWA) and the Ulysses Water Source Protection Plan Committee in developing a Source Water Protection Plan for the Town. In support of this, the DOH will be doing a limited number of well tests for a suite of water quality parameters. We need volunteers who are Ulysses residents not connected to municipal water to have their well tested (no charge to the homeowner). Interested in participating? Please send your name, address, and preferred email contact to private.wells@health.ny.gov by April 22. The DOH will be scheduling a limited number of tests, over the course of 2- 3 days in early-to-mid May. The goal is a good representative sampling of drinking water wells Town-wide. Unfortunately, although we appreciate all who volunteer to participate, not everyone will be able to, due to limited resources. Ideal sampling locations will allow access inside the house. Homeowners will receive a report and explanation of the results. Individual household results will remain confidential with the DOH. The Town will receive a summary report of the findings without any location identifier. This data helps the Town and NYS to understand potential health concerns that may be present in drinking water wells and to focus on developing solutions in Ulysses. LIBRARY BOOKSALE: Ulysses Philomathic Library will hold its annual Spring Book Sale April 18-21. Visit the library website for hours and information. MENTORED HUNTING: First-time hunters can now find mentored hunt events in New York and register for learn-to-hunt opportunities on the new Mentored Hunt Program registration webpage DEC invites groups and organizations to register their mentored hunt events for turkey, deer, waterfowl, pheasants, and other small game. Interested groups should visit the Application to Host a Mentored Hunt site to register. By using DEC's Mentored Hunt program registration, users will: • Make your event more visible to new hunters statewide; • Ease registration for participants; • Track registered participants to better plan your event; and • Promote your event to a wider audience of potential participants. SPRINGTIME BIRD MIGRATIONS ARE UNDERWAY: New York is conveniently located along the Atlantic Flyway, one of the main migration routes. This gives you a great opportunity to observe birds flying to their summer breeding grounds. Grab your binoculars and check out one of these hot spots: • Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Cayuga, Seneca, Wayne counties—a stopover for many species of ducks who are headed farther north. You can see shorebirds, raptors, waterfowl, and songbirds at this WMA. • Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, Genesee and Orleans counties—see many species of waterfowl. • Derby Hill Bird Observatory, Oswego County—known for migrating hawks. • Bashakill WMA, Orange County—view hawks, marshbirds, and waterfowl. • Central Park, NYC—see warblers, in addition to many other species. Did you know that sanitizing your bird feeder helps to limit the spread of disease? It is good practice to clean your bird feeders regularly. Several diseases are commonly spread at bird feeders. Clean bird feeders every 2 weeks with a warm, soapy solution and brush to remove solid particles. Then sanitize for 10 minutes with a 10% bleach solution (1 part household bleach, 9 parts water). Allow the feeder to dry thoroughly before re-filling it with feed. Note: In areas where black bears occur, DEC recommends removing feeders in April, so they do not attract hungry black bears when they emerge from hibernation. SPRINGTIME PHOTO CONTEST: The Town of Ulysses' Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee is conducting a photography competition as part of the Town's Comp Plan update. Each quarter we're requesting community members take photos of the Town that you feel best captures the spirit of our community during that season and submit them to the Committee. Selected photos will be incorporated into the adopted Comp Plan with credits given to the photographer. This season's competition is Spring! The Committee will accept photos that capture the essence of spring in the Town from March 19 to June 19, 2024. Please send an email with your photos in JPEG or TIFF format to: CompPlanSteeringCommittee@townofulyssesny.gov 2024 BOARD OF ELECTIONS STICKER CONTEST SUBMISSION Submit your artwork by May 1, 2024 for: • "I Voted" sticker contest for students in grades 6-12. • NEW"Future Voter" sticker contest for students in grades k-5. "I Voted" stickers will be distributed to all general election voters this November, "Future Voter" stickers will be handed out to young people joining their families at the polls to learn more about democracy and voting. For the "I Voted" sticker contest, submitted artwork must say "I Voted" somewhere visible and must fit in a 2-inch by 2- inch circle. Submissions must be original artwork and may be hand drawn or created using a computer. "Future Voter" submissions may be submitted from a template provided by the County and must also be original artwork and may be hand drawn or created using a computer. Submit your design to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DZ9JSCT SHOOTING SPORTS CLASS JUNE 4-25TH: Trumansburg Fish & Game Club, with Town of Ulysses support, is offering four classes introducing local adults (age 16 and over) to shooting sports involving shotguns and small bore rifles. Participants must be in good standing related to State and Federal firearm regulations. • The first class, to be held the evening of June 4th, will focus on the construction, safety and care of various firearms. • The second class, to be held the evening of June 11th, will focus on safe use and competitive sports involving .22 rimfire rifles. :port The third class, to be held the evening of June 18th, will focus on safe shotgun use and instruction in the of trap. :port The fourth class, to be held the evening of June 25th, will focus on safe shotgun use and instruction in the of skeet. Because of facility limitations, pre-registration is required.
