The tempestuous month of March is upon us. My sprouting daffodils don't know if they're coming or going, and I'm looking forward to more sun and dreading more ticks. Such is the cycle of life in Upstate NY. Next Tuesday, the Town Board will return for a regularly scheduled meeting. You will find the materials and link to join the meeting remotely here. You're also welcome to attend in person at Town Hall. If you have come to Town Hall in the last two weeks or plan to attend in person next Tuesday, you may have or will experience increased security. Last week we had a very angry member of the public put town staff at risk in completely unacceptable ways. We are very grateful for the rapid, professional response of the Village of Trumansburg Police Department. While everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion---and we encourage the public to share their opinions with us- --workplace violence is a very serious issue. We will not and should not tolerate behavior that puts town staff and members of the public in danger. The overwhelming majority of our public already understand this requirement, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve you. COMPREHENSIVE PLAN UPDATES: The Town of Ulysses is working on updating its Comprehensive Plan, a critical summary of the vision and strategies needed to guide the Town's development in a direction our community wants to go. The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee (CPSC) invites all stakeholders, including residents, business owners, youth and visitors to share their important perspectives on what makes our Town great, and where we should be headed. Get involved by: • Joining the Comp Plan Steering Committee's Listsery o The listsery is intended to help keep community members informed about upcoming meetings, news, and events related to the Town's 2025-2045 Periodic Comp Plan Update. • Complete the survey_ • Attend a meeting- next one is March 14 at 5:30pm o Catch up on past meetings by reading minutes or watching on Youtube JOB OPENING- RECREATION ACTIVITY SPECIALIST: The Town is actively seeking a Recreation Activity Specialist. The position is a year-round, part-time (15 hours/week.) The Recreation Activity Specialist will primarily provide important, free and direct positive youth development programming to 5th - 8th graders after school and during the summer. Positive youth development focuses on providing an inclusive, supportive environment for youth. Programmatic priorities and specific activities will be developed in cooperation with youth, the Youth Commission, and Town staff. Administrative assistance will be provided to this position, allowing the employee to primarily focus on direct service provision. ULYSSES IS NOW A BEE CITY Bee City USA is an initiative of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon, with offices across the country. Bee City USA's mission is to galvanize communities to sustain pollinators by providing them with healthy habitat, rich in a variety of native plants and free of insecticides. Pollinators like bumble bees, sweat bees, mason bees, honey bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, and many others are responsible for the reproduction of almost ninety percent of the world's flowering plant species and one in every three bites of food we consume. "The program aspires to make people more PC—pollinator conscious, that is," said Scott Hoffman Black, Xerces' executive director. "If lots of individuals and communities begin planting native, pesticide-free flowering trees, shrubs and perennials, it will create large-scale change for many, many species of pollinators." "How each city completes the steps to conserve pollinators is up to them," said Bee City USA Coordinator Laura Rost. "To maintain their affiliation, each affiliate is expected to report on their achievements and celebrate being a Bee City USA affiliate every year." For more information about Bee City USA, visit https://www.beecityusa.org/ The Town of Ulysses Bee Friendly Community Committee is sponsoring an informational table in the fireplace room of the Ulysses Library through 15, highlighting a collection of books on pollinators that were recently purchased by the library with a grant from the Trumansburg Rotary Club, as well as pollinator-themed books for both adults and children that were already in the library's collection. PRELIMINARY PROPERTY ASSESSMENT UPDATES: Tompkins County Assessment has released the 2024 Preliminary Assessment Roll. CITIZEN PREPAREDNESS CORPS TRAINING: Citizen Preparedness Corps (CPC) training is scheduled for Thursday, March 14th at 6pm at the Trumansburg Fire Department, 74 W. Main Street, sponsored by the Village of Trumansburg and the Trumansburg Volunteer Fire Company. The training gives residents the tools and resources needed to help prepare for any type of disaster or emergency, respond accordingly, and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. CPC trainings are led by New York National Guard members working with experts from the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) in coordination with local emergency management personnel. A key component of the training is the distribution of NYS Disaster Preparedness Kits to attendees (one per family). The training is offered free of charge, but all participants must register in advance at: www.prepare.ny_gov. TOWN OF ULYSSES SUMMER RECREATION CAMP REGISTRATION: The Town of Ulysses Summer Recreation Camp registration will open on Saturday, March 16 at 8am. Sign up at httpa//ulysses.recdesk.com/Community/Program Summer Camp will operate from July 3 -August 11. Registration for Spring programs (track, baseball, softball, tennis, and pickleball) will also open on March 16. TRUMANSBURG COMMUNITY FORUM ON GRASSROOTS FUTURE PLANS The Grassroots organization owns a significant amount of undeveloped land just outside the village and many are curious about plans for developing this area. Representatives from the Grassroots Organization will share their vision and plans for the future, answer your questions about the festival, the land, and entertain ideas about how residents and the festival can work together to meet common goals for the community.The event will take place at 7pm on Tuesday March 12th at the Fellowship Hall, 69 East Main St., Trumansburg.
