I hope you found a way to enjoy the warmth and sun. Lots of activities are happening in the Town of Ulysses, and the newsletter below is chock full of things going on. For some highlights: The Town is hiring! We have a Recreation Activity 3pecialist position open, which will be primarily serving the 5th- 8th grade population with fun, positive youth development activities. Please share the opportunity to join a great team with anyone who may be interested. This position is jointly funded between the Town, the Village and Tompkins County. Prioritizing youth and youth emotional, physical, and mental health is proven to be one of the very best ways that a community can invest its resources; healthy kids are well served to become healthy adults. Save the Date! The very popular Tburg/Ulysses Summer Camp registration opens up at Sam on Saturday, March 16th. If you are not already signed up through RecDesk, now is a good time to make sure you're receiving our direct communications. Winter sports are wrapping up and we're gearing up for spring. The travel basketball teams head to a tournament in Candor next weekend, and there are a couple sessions left of the recreation basketball fundamental program that has served more than 80 youth! The noise and excitement in the high school gym on Saturday mornings is certainly something to behold! Indoor track has been a wonderful addition to the roster this year, and the Town is grateful to all of the adults who make these programs possible for our youth. More information about recreation, including opportunities for adults and youth, are available here. Finally, we also have our regularly scheduled Town Board meeting on Tuesday, February 13th. The board packet is available here. As a note, since many have asked me, the Inn at Taughannock is NOT presenting at this meeting, as originally scheduled. Any future presentations will be shared in the board packet. We're Hiring! Recreation Activity Specialist Opening The Town is actively seeking a Recreation Activity Specialist. The position is a year-round, part-time (15 hours/week.) The Recreation Activity Specialist will primarily provide important, free and direct positive youth development programming to 5th - 8th graders after school and during the summer. Positive youth development focuses on providing an inclusive, supportive environment for youth. Programmatic priorities and specific activities will be developed in cooperation with youth, the Youth Commission, and Town staff. Administrative assistance will be provided to this position, allowing the employee to primarily focus on direct service provision. Experience working with and engaging youth is strongly preferred and additional training and support will be provided. Information about the position, as well as directions regarding how to apply, are available here. COMPREHENSIVE PLAN NEWS: Help our community plan for Ulysses future! The Town of Ulysses has begun to update its Comprehensive Plan, a critical summary of the vision and strategies needed to guide the Town's development in a direction our community wants to go. The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee (CPSC) invites all stakeholders, including residents, business owners, youth and visitors to share their important perspectives on what makes our Town great, and where we should be headed. Please join the Comp Plan Steering Committee's Listsery The listsery is intended to help keep community members informed about upcoming meetings, news, and events related to the Town's 2025-2045 Periodic Comp Plan Update. Seeking Consultant for Plan Update The Town of Ulysses is soliciting a qualified consultant from a multidisciplinary consulting firm to assist in the development of the 2025-2045 Comprehensive Plan Periodic Update and associated Environmental Impact Statement. BEAR BABIES: From NYS DEC: If bears had birthday parties, they'd all be in January and February. That's when winter dens across the country turn into nurseries as most pregnant bears give birth to cubs weighing in at less than a pound that would easily fit into your hands. Human moms would probably envy a mother bear's ability to give birth to one, two, or three or more tiny cubs while half-asleep. Even though cubs are born with their eyes closed, unable to hear or smell and weak and uncoordinated they instinctively find their mom's nipples and start nursing. Soon the den will be filled with mom's snores and the happy sounds of cubs humming and purring while they snuggle up to mom and their siblings and fill their tummies with a steady diet of rich, warm milk. Bear's milk has a fat content around 33%, so nursing cubs have no problem gaining weight. Over the next several weeks, cubs will keep eating, sleeping and growing and eventually start cautiously exploring their winter quarters. As winter slowly gives way to spring, their eyes will open, their teeth will come in and the fine hair they're born with will be replaced by fur coats. Kids in grades 5-8 are invited to drop in as desired or come to all sessions! Instructed by Ryan Holmes, the beloved director of the Tburg Summer Rec Camp, club activities are oriented around team building and cooperation- and are designed to give youth opportunities to solve problems and build relationships in a safe and inclusive environment. Planning Board-Typically meets once a month at 7pm on the 1st Tuesday of the month, and periodically on the 3rd Tuesday as needed. Possible duties include: • The review of, and issuing decisions on, various land use permits including site plan review and special use permits; • The review of, and providing recommendations to the Board of Zoning Appeals on, variance applications, and • The review of, and providing recommendations to the Town Board on, the Town's broad planning goals, policies and long-range plans, such as the Comprehensive Plan rezones, and zoning code revisions. Board of Zoning Appeals-Typically meets once a month at 7pm on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Possible duties include: • Hearing requests and issuing decisions on variances for proposed land uses or developments that do not comply with current local zoning code; and • Hearing and issuing decisions on appeals of any order, requirement, decision, interpretation, or determination made by the Zoning Officer.
