The meeting of the Zoning Board of Appeals of the Town of Ithaca was held on March 13 , 1959 at 5 : 30 P . M . at 132 Forest ' Home Drive , Ithaca , New York . Members present . weree. William Rolston , chairman ; Aldus Fogelsanger ; and Robert Powers . Also present were : Ben Boynton , Zoning Officer , S . L . Boothroy; d ; L . W . Wright ; Mr . and Mrs . J . Loosli ; Mr . and Mrs . R . Krizek ; Mrs . L . Chordash ; and Mr . and Mrs . S . Smith . The chairman called the meeting to order and stated that the purpose of the meeting was to consider - the petition of Mr . and Mrs . Sheldon Smith to erect a residence at the rear of 1031 Hanshaw Road . Access to this residence would constitute a violation of the ordinance . It is proposed . that a ten foot wide driveway extend from Hanshaw Road on the west . side ' of the Smith property to the rear . A map on the back of ' the application for building permit shows the lot and proposed location of the new house and access drive . The proposed house would have no frontage on any street . : The following discussion took place : Mrs . Smith - The total lot size is about an acre which divided between the two houses , would not be out of line with some lots on. Roat Street . There is plenty space on the west of the existing house to put a driveway without the new drive coming too, close . Trees would be planted on both sides of the drive . The new residence would be attractive and is planned as. a place to retire in her old age . Permits would be obtained from the Board of Health but they plan to wait for the sewer and not . to use a septic tank . The hardship lies in the fact that the property was bought with the idea of an extra house being built . She invited the board members to visit the location . 80 Mr . L . Wright - There are other lots in the neighborhood . with space in back where people will want to build homes if this example is started , especially when the water and sewers are available . Mr . J . Loosl"i - We are concerned about the traffic in the new drive being noisy and interfering with our summer living area which is on the new drive side of the house . Mr . S . L . Boothroyd - We do not want anything done to bother the Looslis . Mr . R . Krizek . - If we permit this then other people with lots will want to sell off portions . Mrs . J . Loosli - We do not think- it is in the spirit of the ordinance or in compliance with the neighborhood to allow the extra house in the rear of. the lot . In view of the fact that only three members of the board were present , the motion was made and seconded to dis - cuss this problem. with the Planning Board at their April 1 meeting because of the possibility of many applications of this type in regions where sewer and water will soon be available . There being no other business , the meeting was adjourned . Respectfully submitted , Aldus Fogelsanger , Temporary Secretary . I
