HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-01-25Dryden Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes January 25, 2012 Present= Wendy Martin, Sharon Todd, Jeff Humphrey, Vicki Wilkins, Steve Meyer, Melissa Bian con i, (Cris Bennett, JoEllen Bailey, Stephanie Muli nos, Jett: Walkuski The meeting was called to order at 7,00 p -m- Minutes S Todd made motion to approve t:he minutes of the 1.1 f 30 f 2011. The motion was seconded by J Humphrey. All others voted in favor and the motion ways passed. Resignation .Larry Hinkle sent his resignation To M 'Bianconi, DC$D Liaison Report B Dawns was unable to attend but sent a report: via email. DRC and DYC DYC members were in attendance. The Town Board has asked the DRC and DYG to explore and came up with a proposal for merging these two commissions by the end of 20.12. 1. S Todd provided some history on the DYC and its mission. From being the first Recreation Department, they've come full circle with helping the town hire staff to create a Recreation Department, advising that department as it has formed and groixn over the pat5t few years, helped create a Recreation Master Plan, working currently on Community Center Grants and developing park auras in the town. K Sennett provided some history on the DRC- All municipalities in the county are part of the County Youth Services Program- Or r1ally the money was State, County and 'T'own. The money now comes primarily from the Town, The primary contract now is with Cornell Cooperative Extension and Dave Hall, He works almost exclusively with middle schoolers talcin a lot of referrals #rom school staff about what kids might need a little extra support. This is a mixed group of kids, Having a positive setting where these kids can thrive and succeed is important to the kids that are referred to the prograrn- There are some lunchtime programs but mast are aftersebool- The opportunity Understand Respect Success - OURS - they serge kids in Borne of the mobile home parks in the area- The part -time staff member at C CE has about S0 Cornell volunteers - it's a 3 -day a week program- Mondays is a 1 -on -1 tutoring program, Tut Belay is the Teen and 'I'ween Leadership Council for the kids who have been in the program for a li ttle awhile - it's a smaller group, they're been successful in getting Cornell Grant money to help with pragramm1ng for Tuesdays, Friday it's just a fun day - They provide transportation. In order for the Cornell students to participate, the program can't happen. at 3:00 when school ends - it runs in the evening, This year, both villages will have a youth counselor employed at their summer camps. They do a needs asse=ssment every 3 year. , Kris has reset with the Villages to let them know what the IDRC and DYC are working on - meeting to discuss a merger. What would our next steps look like? The commissions would need to discuss the number of members that's feasible, makeup or those members, common goals. Discussed a I1imeline for malting these decisions so that a recommendation can be put together to the Town Board. Joint meeting discussed for April. DRIB 01 =25 =2012 Page 2 of 2 Community Grant funding 2012 There have been a lot of inquiries to the funding changes to the community grant and some new groups are interested in applyuig. Va neies With L Hinkle's resignation and W Martin taking a 1 year appointment as Community Center Rep, there are now two vacancies, V Wilkins made a rna6on to recommend the town board not fill the vii rrent vacancies at this time, The TB has charged the DRC with the task of working with the DYC to explore rnerging w9ithin the next year_ Due to the transitions expected over the next year, and due to the very active members currently on the DRC which will ensure a quorum at meetings, it seems boat to not introduce any new members at this time.
