HomeMy WebLinkAboutDRC Membership GuidelinesTown of Dryden - Dryden Recreation Commission (1)R C) Membership Guidelines Responsibilities of the Dryden Recreation Commission: To ensure that polio -res, activities and program priorities tare congruent with the mission and goals of the DRC, To provide advisory assistance to the Recreation Coordinator and the organization as a whale when needed, To provide prudent and responsible oversight of DRC resources and the al location of these resources- - To communicate the vision and accomplishments of the DRC and the Recreation Department, to the Dryden Community - Responsibiitties of individual Board Members: Within larger framework of bRG responsibilities, the individual Commission tnembers must each fulfiII certain obligations to the organization- Those obligations include: ■ Attend all committee meetings and functions, and be prepared to participate- 5 tay informed about DRC matters review end comment on minutes and reports, * Stay informed about the DRC's mission, services, policies, and programs. • Keep up -to -dote on developments in the organization's field, • FoIlow developments in the community, economy, government, etc, that may affect the DRC, Serve on sub - committees and offer to take on special assignments- ■ Participate in fundraising, Inform others about the 1) PC Time Commitment and Attendance Requiremen?s6 19 • Members are expected to attend ail regularly scheduled and specially scheduled meetings, In the event that a member• is absent from three consecutive meetings, or in the event that o member is absent from five meetings within any one calendar year, then such member may be removed from the DRC. (Town of Dryden Local Law 1) « Each newly - elected Commission member wilt serve for a three -year terra unless they are filling a remaining term of a vacated slot. • Commission members will attend monthly DRC meetings and other related meetings as needed. They will attend the Dryden Town Board meetings as frequently a5 necessarylpossible, • They will read DRC tnaiI and email for review of DRC matters, and will respond promptly to posted messages- If special meetings are called, they will make every effort to attend. • The time commitment required for effective 1)RC participation is approximately 2 -6 hours per month, QUO lificatiors: • DRC members must be committed to ensuring equitable access of recreation for everyone, Prior experience in recreation planning and development, community outreach, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and management, media relations, and facility development would be helpful, Commission members should be team players- Diversity on the DRC is encouraged. DRC is going through a period of rapid change, AAembers should be fIexible, goal- oriented, and possess a good sense of humor. Experience as a 1) PC volunteer should be a signif icant factor in choosing new members- 40 Page 1 of 2 Selecting DRC Members: Because the DRC plays an important role in the community, 'In our search for Commiss +on members we look for indr+�iduals who: + Can bring a variety of skills, experience, and diversity to the organization. Have backgrounds and contacts that differ from - but compliment = those of the other members. This diversity is vital to maintaining a "balanced' commission composition- Have concern for the community's development, and are willing to learn about the recreation and leisure industry. + Have a developed sense of values and personal integrity. * Are sensitive to and tolerant of views and opinions different from their own + Are friendly, responsive, and patient, and have a sense of humor, + Work well with individuals and groups, • Can listen, analyze, and think clearly and creatively- Are not hesitant to a.5k questions- + Are willing to prepare for and attend DRC meetings- • 1111 take responsibility and fallow through on assignments. • Are willing to contribute personal resources to the organization, and to cultivate and solicit outside resources- Can open doors in the community, + Can recruit DRC members and other volunteers. + Are willing to develop skills they need in order to be effective DRC members (a.g., theabiIity to read and understand comprehensive plans, legal documents, etc -). • Get to knows other members; build working relationships that contribute to consemsus- • Suggest nominees to the commission who can make significant contributions to the work of the DR and the Town recreation department. • Participate actively in the r~ommission's annual evaluation and planning efforts- Keep in mind thri + Members have no individual authority separate of the Commission, + Members are expected to support decisions of the DRC, regardless of personal desires and/or opinions, Sources consulted in compiling this information inckide: Ten Basic Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards.
