Public Works Committee
June 22,2010
Present: Rich DePaolo, Chair; Bill Goodman;and Jim Weber
The meeting began at 11.15 a.m.
The minutes were approved.
Warren Road Walkway: The Committee discussed that the Public Works employees
have been working to get the easements and permits needed to put the walkway in.
This is coming along—we have got the easement for Warrenwood Apartments.
Forest Home Drive Traffic Calming: Jim Weber informed the Committee that we
received one bid for the Forest Home Drive Traffic Calming project. This bid was
overpriced,so the Highway Superintendent/Director of Public Works decided to reject
the bid. The sections of the bid that were high are: Traffic Control ($55,000),Texture
Polymer ($20,000),Foundations ($20,000), and Light pole/fixture ($15,000). We have
changed some items, and the State and the president of the Forest Home Drive
Association (Michael Bend) are OK with these changes. The changes are: We modified
the traffic control plan/requirements to just show localized traffic control rather than
area wide signage during the project ($50,000 savings). We eliminated the textured
polymer and replaced it with paint. There will be more maintenance by the Town
crews, but we would save approximately $30,000. We eliminated the stone masonry
and cap from the light foundations and replaced it with paint or stain. This would be a
savings of approximately $35,000.
Helen's Way Planting: The Committee reviewed the plan for plantingson Helen's Way.
Bill Goodman said that he would meet with Pat Dutt. Jim said that the Town will
replace the trees that have not survived at the intersection with Westhaven Road.
Emerald Ash Borer: Rich DePaolo said that he had a meeting with an entomologist
regarding the impact in this area of the emerald ash borer.
Town Hall Roof: The Committee reviewed the estimate repair costs for the Town Hall
roof. The roof would cost approximately 160,000 and the parapet$100,000, estimating
$275,000 to 300,000 for the whole project. Jim recommended both the roof and parapet
be repaired at the same time. This project will be budgeted for in 2011.
Northeast Theses Project: At the last meeting,John Licitra requested to do his theses by
studying the stormwater and rain water flows in the Northeast. The Committee
