MOBILE FOOD TRUCK CHECKLIST FOR THE TOWN OF ITHACA
The following list is not an exhaustive list of the New York State Fire Code or the Town of Ithaca Code for
Mobile Food Preparation Vehicle/Truck, but does provide for many items inspected and reviewed during the
application and inspection process: (TOI Code means Town of Ithaca Code and NYSFC means New York
State Fire Code).
A. 202-4 D. TOI Code:
a. 15 feet from a side yard or rear yard property line, when the parcel is located within or
contiguous to a residential zoning district. This minimum required distance does not apply to
a side yard or rear yard property line that abuts a private street
B. 202-4 E TOI Code:
a. five feet from the edge of any driveway, utility box or vault, mobility ramp, building
entrance, exit or emergency access/ exit way
C. 202-4 F. TOI Code:
a. located in a location that ensures adequate ingress and egress from the property to prevent
traffic congestion or safety hazards.
D. 202-4 G TOI Code:
a. Does not interfere with free flow of pedestrian or vehicular traffic, visibility at any driveway
or intersection, and not unreasonably interfere with the activities of other businesses or
interfere with other Lawful activities or violate any statutes, ordinances, laws or regulations
E. 202-4 H TOI Code:
a. demonstrate that a minimum of four parking spaces are available on the lot (or on an
immediately adjacent lot with the adjacent lot owner' s written permission)
F. 202-4 I TOI Code:
a. Food trucks must be located at minimum 100 feet away from the entrance of a brick - and -
mortar restaurant unless the food truck is operated or owned by the same person who owns
said brick and mortar restaurant. Notwithstanding the foregoing, a food truck may be
located on the brick -and -mortar restaurant' s lot with consent of the brick and mortar
restaurant owner
G. 202-5 A TOI Code:
a. Valid Tompkins County Health Department permit for a mobile food service operation
H. 202-5 C. TOI Code :
a. Food truck freestanding signage not to exceed 6 sq.ft. be on the same parcel
I. 202-5 D TOI Code :
a. Trash and recycling receptacles within 10 feet of their food truck
J. 319.3 NYSFC 2020:
a. Kitchen exhaust hood in accordance with Section FC607.
K. 319.4.1 NYSFC 2020:
a. Cooking equipment protected by automatic fire extinguishing systems (Section FC904.12).
L. 319.4.2 NYSFC 2020:
a. Fire extinguisher in accordance with FC906.4
M. 319.5 NYSFC 2020:
a. Appliance connection to fuel supply piping, secured in place and connected to fuel-supply
piping complying with ANSI Z21.69/CSA 6.16,configured in accordance with the
manufacturer's installation instructions,
N. 319.6 NYSFC 2020:
a. Cooking oil storage containers- maximum aggregate volume not more than 120 gallons (454
L), and shall be stored not be toppled or damaged during transport.
O. 319.7.1 NYSFC 2020:
a. Metallic cooking oil storage tanks- listed in accordance with UL 80 or UL 142, and installed
in accordance with the tank manufacturer's instructions.
P. 319.7.2 NYSFC 2020:
a. Nonmetallic cooking oil storage tanks installed in accordance with 319.7.2 manufacturer's
instructions, listed for use with cooking oil, including maximum temperature to which the
tank will be exposed during use, and Tank capacity shall not exceed 200 gallons (757 L) per
tank.
Q. 319.7.5 NYSFC 2020:
a. Normal and emergency venting shall be provided for cooking oil storage tanks
R. 319.8.1 NYSFC 2020:
a. LP-gas containers transported on the vehicle and used to fuel cooking appliances only shall
not exceed 200 pounds
S. 319.8.2 NYSFC 2020:
a. LP-gas containers securely mounted and restrained
T. 319.8.3 NYSFC 2020:
a. LP-gas containers manufactured in compliance with NFPA 58.
U. 319.8.4 NYSFC 2020:
a. LP-gas system piping, valves and fittings protected to prevent tampering, impact damage,
and damage from vibration.
V. 319.8.5 NYSFC 2020:
a. LP-gas alarm- within the vehicle- in the vicinity of LP-gas system components, in
accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
W. 319.9.1.1 NYSFC 2020:
a. CNG containers transported on the vehicle shall not exceed 1,300 pounds (590 kg) water
capacity
X. 319.9.1.2 NYSFC 2020:
a. CNG protection of container securely mounted and restrained and not locations subject to a
direct vehicle impact
Y. 319.9.1.2 NYSFC 2020:
a. CNG containers shall be an NGV-2 cylinder.
Z. 319.9.4 NYSFC 2020:
a. CNG -A listed methane gas alarm shall be installed in vehicle and in accordance
manufacturer's instructions.
AA. 319.10.1 NYSFC 2020:
a. Exhaust system cleaned in accordance with Section FC607.3
BB. 319.10.2 NYSFC 2020:
a. Fire protection systems and devices maintained in accordance with FC901.6.
CC. 319.10.3 NYSFC 2020 (CNG):
a. CNG containers inspected every 3 years in a qualified service facility with tag fixed to
tank(s). CNG containers shall not be used past their expiration date as listed on the
manufacturer's container label. Tag of the name of the inspection agency and the date of
satisfactory inspection to be in the vehicle or on the systems
DD. 319.10.3 NYSFC 2020 (LP):
a. LP-gas containers and fuel-gas piping inspected annually by an approved inspection agency
or a company that is registered with the U.S. DOT to requalify LP-gas cylinder with tag of
the name of the inspection agency and the date of satisfactory inspection.
