HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-07 NewsletterJuly 2023 Town of Ithaca Newsletter Town of Ithaca Awarded “Conservationist of the Year” by the Finger Lakes Land Trust The Town of Ithaca “acted quickly to secure significant open space over the course of the past year and continue to build on their ongoing commitment to land and water conservation.” The Town acquired a second parcel along Rte. 13 bordering the Cayuga Inlet located within the proposed Black Diamond Rail Trail extension. The property features significant fish and wildlife habitat. We also have a long-standing partnership with the FLLT which included collaboration on the creation of 3 town-owned nature preserves and recently, financial support in the Tapan Mitra Preserve expansion project that included upgrades and expansion of existing parking area, wayfinding and informational signage. Register here: https://bit.ly/Town-Ithaca-pollinator-garden-tour NYS Association of Conservation Commission Conference on the Environment Tompkins County is host to this year's Conference on the Environment September 20th - 22nd The Conference which will be bi-modal with one virtual day and two days of field trips and receptions around the County, including a number of spots in the Town of Ithaca. Topics include Meeting Climate Goals in Ag and Biodiversity respectively; Cayuga Lake & Water Quality; Climate Policy; Flooding & Climate Change, and more. NYSACC is an independent, not-for-profit education organization established in 1971 by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to provide leadership in the development of vital environmental programs for cities, towns, and villages throughout the State of New York. Construction Season – In Full Swing Milling and Paving Beginning: July 14th – Town of Ithaca Public Works - Southwoods Dr., Old Gorge Rd., and Eldridge Cir. July 17th – Tompkins County Highway - King Rd E between Coddington and Troy Roads Road construction by nature is weather permitting. Any driveway obstruction will be temporary and reopened as soon as possible. There may be disruptions in traffic during the day and/or nights where only milled surface is in place. No parking is permitted on the roadway or shoulder at any time during construction; vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense. Capital Improvement Projects Beginning: July 13th – approximately 2 months – New Water Main Installation 130-172 Ridgecrest Rd An automated one lane traffic closure will be in place throughout the project. Customers may experience short periods of low water pressure and service interruptions. Bolton Point will make every effort to notify affected residents 24 hours in advance. DMV – 301 Third St., Ithaca – Hancock Plaza Learn More About Fee Allocations “I Voted” Sticker Contest Results Tompkins County Board of Elections Over 2,100 votes were cast by residents of Tompkins County from eight fantastic submissions by students from our local schools. Alanna Congdon, Commissioner, said “…they were fantastic and great expressions of our local artistic talent.” The contest was announced as part of efforts to involve and inspire the next generation in civics and elections. Congratulations to Dakota Tseng and thank you to all eight participants.
