HomeMy WebLinkAboutBrush & Leaf PSA - WebGENERAL INFORMATION Collection services are for all areas of the Town of Ithaca outside of the Village of Cayuga Heights and City of Ithaca. Errant yard debris (brush, leaves) can wreak havoc on storm water systems and create hazardous conditions. Debris you collect before the first day of the collection must remain out of rights-of-way until a week before the collection to assure safety and prevention from wreaking havoc on storm water systems. All debris should be at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the first day of collection. Collection crews reserve the right to not pick up excessively large volumes of brush and improperly piled materials. Crews may be out earlier than the start date to test equipment and may pick up properly placed yard debris. Town of Ithaca residents may drop their yard waste (brush, leaves, garden/yard debris) at the Public Works facility at 114 Seven Mile Dr., Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. year-round. Please sign in at the office. For questions, please call 273-1656 or e-mail us at: publicworks@townithacany.gov BRUSH/LEAF COLLECTION EVENTS BRUSH collection begins at 7:00AM on the annually determined date and continues one round throughout the town until finished. There will be no second collection or call backs. Proper Preparation for Brush Collection: • Brush should be piled in neat bundles going with the flow of traffic so chipping trucks can feed the cut ends first. • Limb diameter must be 8 inches or less (note: it is not necessary to cut limbs into small pieces). • Brush piles should be no larger than a pickup load (approximately 2 feet x 4 feet x 8 feet in size). Clearing of building lots and hedgerows is beyond a normal amount of material. • Do not tie bundles. Do not place any materials in a ditch. • Place along road shoulder or at end of the driveway if no shoulder exits. • No metal, rocks, glass, roots, stumps, or lumber scraps will be picked up. ************************************************************************************************************ LEAF collection begins at 7:00AM on the annually determined date and continues throughout the town until finished. In the fall, crews will go around the entire town once with the leaf vacuum. There will be no second collection or call backs. For subsequent weeks in November, crews will be collecting bagged leaves only. Proper Preparation for Leaf Collection: In the fall, leaves may be raked to the shoulder of the road or bagged in biodegradable paper leaf bags. Other debris such as pine needles, ornamental grass, dead flowers, garden waste, grass clippings, etc., cannot be vacuumed and should be placed in bags. Please fill bags and place on road shoulder, folding openings to close—do not staple or tape. No plastic bags will be collected. Do not put metal, rocks, glass, lumber scraps, etc., in the bags. In the spring, leaves are not vacuumed. Only bagged leaves/yard waste in biodegradable bags will be collected using the proper preparation noted above.
