HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-04 Newsletter The final presentation of our series celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Town Monday, April 12th at 5:30 Bicentennial Re-enactment of early Town of Ithaca Board Meetings We will hear from Supervisor Nathan Herrick, Town Clerk Isaac Beers and Overseer of the Poor Jesse Merritt along with the Pound Master and Inspector of Common Schools among others The Pound Master was responsible for catching and holding sheep, cattle and horses that ran “at large.” At the one of the early meetings, a motion was passed to “prohibit swine from running free” and later, “no seed horse shall be allowed to run at large under penalty of $20.” Pound Masters were not responsible for companion animals like dogs or cats. Below is the Town of Ithaca’s Marks and Strays book from that period… 3 holes in the left ear; lop of the right ear… The Overseer of the Poor was responsible for administering to the needs of the poor and collecting and managing the poor tax. The Town has old applications from September 1888 which granted $8 to this widow. View previous bicentennial events at Town Videos Spring Brush Clean Up Reminder Spring brush and leaf pickup will begin Monday April 19th. All yard waste must be at the roadside by 7 a.m. on the first day of collection. There will be no second collection and no call backs. The Public Works facility is open for leaf, mulch and wood chip pick up/drop off for Town of Ithaca and Village of Cayuga Heights residents. INCOME TAX FILING INFORMATION Town and County Tax and School Receipts for IRS and State Returns The filing deadline has been extended through May 17th if paid in full Federal State Join us for A Day at the Races Week! The Kentucky Derby Run for the Roses kicks off on Friday April 30th. Come in that week dressed for the races and pick your winner for a chance at a prize. Next Month’s Fun Week is focused on Public Works. We will sport reflective vests and hard hats and think of a few games…. Any ideas? Town Outdoor Recreational Opportunities The Town has many parks, playfields, and walking/hiking trails we maintain for residents to enjoy. Here is a link to our pamphlet showing what is available at each location. Parks & Trails The Town also contributes financial support to the City of Ithaca for both the Cass Park Skating and Swimming programs (discounted passes) and Stewart Park facilities in recognition of the benefits provided to town residents from these facilities. Conservation Board and Similar Agency(s) Announcements The Cayuga Lake Watershed Network is partnering with the Finger Lakes PRISM in Geneva to collect hydrilla reports from around the lake. The Network is looking for volunteers to help spot hydrilla because the earlier it is caught the better. No experience required and tools and training will be provided. Please help us help them protect our natural resource, Cayuga Lake. Application Conservation Board - 2020 Richard Fischer Award Primitive Pursuits The Conservation Board has selected Primitive Pursuits as its winner of the Richard B. Fischer Environmental Conservation Award. The Award is in recognition of those who have actively contribute to the improvement of our natural environment. A commemorative tree(s) will be planted in their honor in an Ithaca park, trail or preserve. The Town of Ithaca Conservation Board meets the first Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, currently via Zoom. The public are welcome to join us. Details at Meeting Calendar on Town website. Tompkins County Happenings The Tompkins County Health Department COVID 19 Clinic COVID 19 Vaccinations are now available to everyone over 16 years of age. Rabies Clinic Rabies Vaccination Clinic is scheduled for April 24th at the TCAT Garage. Preregistration is required.
