HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-07-24 1 SPECIAL TOWN BOARD MEETING JULY 24, 2013 A Special Meeting of the Lansing Town Board was held at the Town Hall Board Room, 29 Auburn Road, Lansing, NY on the above date at 7:40 a.m. The meeting was called to order by the Supervisor, Kathy Miller and opened with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Roll call by Debbie Crandall, Town Clerk, showed the following to be PRESENT: Kathy Miller, Supervisor Katrina Binkewicz, Councilperson Robert Cree, Councilperson Ruth Hopkins, Councilperson Edward LaVigne, Councilperson ABSENT: None ALSO PRESENT: One other attendee. CONSIDER RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE CAYUGA POWER PLANT CONVERT TO NATURAL GAS DISCUSSION The Town Board fully discussed the information they currently have on the conversion of the Cayuga Power Plant. Along with the consideration of the economics and impact it would have on the tax base for the county, town and school district if the plant were to close. It was the consensus of the Town Board to fully support the following resolution ensuring the ongoing operation of the Cayuga Operating Plant which will protect taxpayers and preserve jobs. The Town Clerk will send a certified resolution to Senator Nozzolio’s Office showing the Town’s support in the repowering project and keeping the plant open. The public hearing is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Monday, July 29th at the Lansing Middle School Auditorium. RESOLUTION 13-113 RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE CAYUGA POWER PLANT CONVERT TO NATURAL GAS The following Resolution was duly presented for consideration by the Town Board: WHEREAS, the Cayuga Power Plant, located in Lansing New York is considering repowering the plant using a source of fuel other than coal (repowering proposal 12-E- 0577; and WHEREAS, the Public Service Corporation suggested repowering the plant using natural gas in order to provide between 150 and 300 megawatts to be used to supplement electric needs at times of high demand; and WHEREAS, ensuring the ongoing operation of the Cayuga Operating Plant which will protect our property taxpayers, while retaining good jobs; and WHEREAS, upon due deliberation thereupon, the Town Board of the Town of Lansing has RESOLVED that based on the current information provided to date, the Lansing Town Board does hereby fully support the proposal to repower the coal-powered Cayuga Power Plant in the Town of Lansing to natural gas. The question of the adoption of such proposed Resolution was duly motioned by Supervisor Kathy Miller, duly seconded by Councilperson Edward LaVigne, and put to a roll call vote with the following results: 2 Councilperson Katrina Binkewicz - Aye Councilperson Robert Cree - Aye Councilperson Ruth Hopkins - Aye Councilperson Edward LaVigne - Aye Supervisor Kathy Miller - Aye Accordingly, the foregoing Resolution was approved, carried, and duly adopted on July 24, 2013. MOTION TO ADJOURN MEETING Councilperson Robert Cree moved to ADJOURN THE JULY 24, 2013 SPECIAL TOWN BOARD MEETING AT 8:05 AM. Supervisor Kathy Miller seconded the motion.
