VI . Guest Speaker - Lyle Raymond - Aquifers
Generally speaking an aquifer is a deposit of surface materials
characterized by pores which enable it to hold water .
Currently there is a need for more information on aquifers in
Tompkins County , the last study dating to 1974 . A committee
formed to study the situation recommended that :
1 ) more information be gathered ;
a• well registration program be instituted . Well drillers
would record location of well and type of material drilled
through .
411 2 ) A public information program be instituted to alert people
to the need to protect these areas . Have a rural water survey ;
3 ) upgrade aquifer map with material already available ;
4 ) the City of Ithaca not approve any landfill proposal in or
near any known aquifer ;
Known aquifers in Lansing :
1 ) Lansing School Rd .
2 ) Peruville Rd . (Town boundary )
3 ) Salmon Creek
4 ) Myers Point
5 ) Portland Point
Possible sources of aquifer contamination :
1 ) inefficient septic systems ;
2 ) leaking fuel tanks ;
411 3 ) industries using potentially dangerous chemicals ( zoning regs
should prohibit location near aquifers ) ;
4 ) careless disposal of waste oil .
