Three times a day - or was it four?? A 161 whistle at the plant blew to announce the time of day. 162 163 Three times a day a two-car electric train, shuttling between Auburn and Ithaca, stopped, 164 deposited and/or picked up passengers and mail. In the summertime it always disrupted the 165 baseball game (played with a tennis ball and a broom handle for a bat: that went on between 166 the high, cement wall of the cement plant and the railroad tracks. 167 168 When the wind blew just wrong, clean cement dust floated heavily over the company-owned 169 homes on the hill and dropped, leaving a crust of gray film on the roofs and the yards, 170 turning into flaky fragments of concrete when the rains came. And yet the gardens which 171 almost every family had to help supplement the weekly paycheck, produced whatever they 172 were intended to produce. 173 Page 10 of 18 APPROVED 174 Chickens, ducks and geese shared the road, (separating the two rows of houses and made up 175 the mainstream of the town) with people. Quite often the geese, perhaps thinking that is was 176 territory they had inherited from the Indians, stretched out their long, slinder necks, opened 177 their bills and tried to scare the adults (or anyone or anything without feathers) off the road. 178 Sometimes they succeeded. Sometimes not, which could be testified by hearty goose dinners 179 that filled the plates of various families over the weekends. 180 181 Snow blanketed the town every winter. It seemed to have come with relish. Not only for kids, 182 but for adults, too, who enjoyed sledding. For -what else was there to do? 183 184 There was barn across the creek from a long garage (the garage housed about ten to fifteen 185 cars, I can't quite remember, now), in which we kids played basketball. Since the ceiling was 186 higher on the second floor, this is where we kids played. Without refs. There are five players 187 on each team, but if there were fourteen guys present, all fourteen played. It was rough and 188 tumble and an awful lot of fun. It was the memory of this barn that gave me the setting for 189 one of my sports books, Sink in Rusty. 190 191 192 Project Title: Finger Lakes Marine Service, Inc.
