SW of jct. of Hinman Road and Hatfield Road. Cover Type forest, wet meadow, shrub thicket, pasture Site Description Groundwater seepage area on a hillside downslope of a patch of hemlock forest. Seepage is cold and diffuse. The soils are highly organic. Vegetation consists of patches that are dominated by Rhamnus alnifolia shrubs and patches dominated by sedges and forbs. Beneath the taller plants there is a nearly continuous cover of wet moss. There are scattered shrubs and small trees of Amelanchier spp., Tsuga (dwarfed), Salix spp. and Vaccinium corymbosum. . Beneath both of these canopies the cover of mosses is nearly continuous. Dominant herbs: Carex sp. Characteristic species: Thalictrum pubescens, Geum rivale, Equisetum spp., Trollius laxus, Thelypteris palustris, Smilacina stellata, Solidage patula, Lilium canadense, and Senecio aureus. Dominant mosses include: Tomenthypnum ritens, Sphagnum warnstorfii and Amacomnium palustre. (see site description.) There is a definite history of use as pasture - which continues now. Potential for recovery is excellent as all the characteristic fen species are still intact, and the habitat appears unaltered. Adjacent Land Use pastures, woodlots Threats to Site Grazing and trampling by cattle. Site appears to be in an active cow pasture. I Vulnerability of Site to Visitors site is quite fragile. Special Conservation/Management Needs Keeping cattle out of best parts of the site would be desirable. Some management might be needed to keep fen open. Ideally fen openings should be surrounded in forest. This would mean allowing the surrounding pasture to grow up to trees.
