Cover Type Upland forest, marsh, wet meadow, aquatic vegetation, rock outcrops, open water Site Description This area is floodplain forest and wetland with a lagoon at the base of Cayuga Lake. A steep exposed cliffside above the floodplain has dry -land vegetation. Significance The area is important lake -side vegetation and habitat for birds, especially migrants. (Communities, Significant/Unusual Features, Species, Age, Structure, etc.) Most upland species found here are typical of creek floodplains and other rich sites. There is evidence of disturbance and weedy species and cultivated species are also present. The marsh has common marsh species. The cliffside has common cliffside species. Although rare plants are few, the site is very diverse: the number of species present on this small site is unusually high. Some showy species such as Iris psuedocorus, yellow iris, are- present. Two tributaries of Coy Glen are north of Elem Street Extenison, north of the bridge. Cover Type Upland forest, old field forest, open water, rock outcrops. Site Description This area includes steep -sided gorge (with stream) and hilltops which are forested.1 Significance This is an important botanic and geologic site. The hilltop forests, on deep gravel deposits, have uncommon communities and rare species are found. Area is noted for scarce liverworts, mosses and ferns. Area known for excellent examples of hanging deltas now mostly destroyed by gravel extraction. Talus slopes. Large granite erratics. Potholes. Excellent examples joint plane fracturing, fossil ripple marks. (Communities, Significant/Unusual Features, Species, Age, Structure, etc.) Much of the glen is forested upland. The wooded slopes above the glen are dry and in places xeric. The well -drained gravel deposits have rare plant communities. On the dripping gorge walls a great variety of liverworts, mosses and ferns are found. Some of these are locally scarce or rare. Hemlock is the dominant species in the shady gorge, but oaks and hickories are common on the hillsides above the gorge. Most mining has ended. Vulnerability of Site to Visitors Site is especially vulnerable to visitors because of steep erodible gorge sides and very shallow fragile soils on crests and outcrops. Formerly section to W of Rt. 13A also. Cover Type V wet meadow, marsh Site Description Calcareous marsh and rich fen grading into shrub carr. Disturbed part being invaded by Lythrum and scattered large Salix trees. Significance Botanical: scarce species, marginal example of rare community. Exlcudes gravel plant. Access from gravel plant road, Sand Bank Road, Finger Lakes Trail through Lick Brook on S. Cover Type Site Description Formerly, very choice site; but best part was filled in, water table and drainage have been altered. Little interest remains except one rare plant somehow persists. Sycamore -cottonwood -black willow -box elder; white oak -northern red oak -hickory; alder swamp; marsh; hemlock -yellow birch; beech -sugar maple; white pine and spruce plantations. Many other trees common. NYSPNP-24 species. Andrew' # -9,2. Tamarack '(Larix laricina), marsh horsetail (Equisetum palustre)- only area in Cayuga Lake basin, ebony spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron), hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), pinxter flower (Rhododendron nudiflorum), cucumber tree (Magnolia acuminata), black walnut, butternut (Juglans nigra and J. cinerea), poison sumac (Rhus vernix), northern prickly ash (Zanthoxylem americanum), American hazelnut (Corylus americana), maidenhair spleenwort (Asplenium trichomanes), others. Cover Type oldfield/brushland, young deciduous, mature deciduous Site Description Fairly big stream gorge that cuts into the steep slope of the Cayuga Inlet valley. The very steep slopes of the gorge have nice examples of mesic forests. Several waterfalls, the largest one is quite high. Significance Beautiful wooded gorge w/waterfalls. High -quality forests on steep slopes. Scarce plant species. (Communities, Significant/Unusual Features, Species, Age, Structure, etc.) As is so often the case, the oldest stands are in the most inaccessible places. The best forest stands are on steep slopes between waterfalls. Sugar maple -basswood -white ash and mixed oak types are present. At the base of the slope there are some wetlands that formerly contained small areas of high -quality rich fen. These are now fairly degraded, but restoration potential may exist.
