A quilt, made about 1888 was presented to Reverend Cordello C. Herrick and his wife
Emily Elizabeth Taylor Herrick. It is speculated that the quilt was made either to
welcome the new minister (appointed to the Locke Methodist Church in 1888) or to
celebrate the birth of their first child, Ada Emily Herrick who was born July 22, 1888
in Locke. Ada Herrick attended Syracuse University, graduating in 1910 with a four
year degree in Piano and Theory of Music. She married Herbert E. Yury of Seneca
Falls, a photographer and lived in Auburn NY the remainder of her years where she
taught piano to hundreds of young students, was an organist a several churches and
conducted piano recitals for over 70 years.
This Quilt contains 56 primary panels (8 by 7) and 42 interior panels (6 x 7).
Fifty-three primary panels and 14 interior panels are signed for a total of 67 signed

Hi
Your morgue pictures are startling. It seems unbelievable that the conditions are still so vivid and
macabre after all these years. It seems a crime to humanity that it was left in such a state. It must
have been very difficult to view.
But, you got my.memory back on track and I looked up what I have on my great Auntie Stone.
She was born 1863, Hannah(not Grace)Estes Whipple, dau. of Jonah Whipple,Jr. and Elizabeth
Raner, owasco/Niles,NY. Her parents are buried in Cwasco cemetery. Estes was her grandmother's
maiden name--Lydia Estes Whipple. Hannah married William Stone, he b. 1858. I don't have
anything in my files on William. He must have died fairly early on for there are no family pictures
which include him. I do know they owned two residences, one--a farm on the outskirts of Locke, going
toward Croton, on the east side of the highway. Then they had a house in Locke, noted by one
historian as the oldest residence in town, across from the gas station, (Rodney's once)and from that
property, to the south, land was taken for the house that nay grandma Carrie Lane built. I don't know
the exact year but my brother John would know because he now owns Crandma's old house.
Grandma,and Aunt Pauline had not lived in their new house long when it became necessary to move
Auntie Stone into one of the upstairs bedrooms. It was soon evident that she was senile and she was
removed to Willard.
I don't think she lived there very long before she died. I did go with my folks to visit her one time and
I cannot tell the year,but I have always had a vivid recall of entering a large room with numerous
wicker body baskets lying in rows on the floor. I wonder if that was the origin of the literal phrase—
basket case? She was very frail and tiny.
She had a daughter, race Stone 1884-1900, a son Garland Stone 1898-1900, and an adop. son Sidney
Stone, buried in Locke. She composed and had a commercially printed song, "My Darling Grace", in
memory of her daughter. They may be buried in Bird Cemetery or some other small rural one. I have
not looked.
I am mailing some interesting old copies of pictures.

I would be interested in reading the article.
I'm glad Roger could visit you.It was so important for my parents to have
our support in their later years and there you are all alone.It's probably
good that Uncle George hashis work to occupy his mind when faced with
medical concerns.I hope you have something that helps you as well since
care giving is enormously stressful and isolating.I found the office of
Aging and their support groups very helpful as I negotiated the various
issues of mom's care.

Hello Aunt Lucille,
I hope you and Uncle George are doing well.
While reading this afternoon I came across a name I wonder if among our genealogy:
The Rt. Rev. Henry Benjamin Whipple, D.D., LL.D.,(Bishop of Mn. 1859-1899).
1 am well, still at St. Matthew's Moravia twice a month but starting in Horseheads Nov 7th.
