He served on the local board of Selective Service for 11 years and spent much of his life as a vounteer worker in church and community service projects. He and his late wife,who died this year,were married in Oc- tober 1893.Mrs.Rumsey par- ticipated as actively in public life as her partner,most of her life. Rumsey,who will be 97 in July and is a member of En- field Valley Grange,is the only person in New York State to hold the title of Deputy Emeri- tus.The office was created for him when he retired from active participation in Grange work. The certificate and pin were given to Rumsey at his home by State Grange Mas- ter Russell Curtis of Cazenovia. Curtis said that less than 20 persons in New York State have ever received the award. In a surprise ceremony,Rum-sey'-s daughter,who lives with him,Mrs.Hazel Updike,re- ceived her Grange mem- bership pin and certificate. The presentation was made by George Stark,Enfield Valley Grange Master. Rumsey,a native of the Trumbull Corners area and life- long resident of the county,is a charter member of Tompkins County Pomona Grange and has held numerous posts in Grange from local to national level,in-- eluding several years as a spe-- cial state deputy. McCormack said:"I think the petition...is one of the finest patriotic acts that I have ever seen by a group of Ameri- cans:I congratulate...the stu- dents of Cornell University who signed it." McCormack also said he would place the petition into the Con- gressional Record and then re- fer it to the .House judiciary committee. "If a bill is reported out of the committee on the iudiciarv. will bring it up as quickly as possible for the consideration of the House of Representatives," the speaker added.
