October 1990 “inhabitants” of the Town of Enfield sent a petition around to change the name of Countyline/Townline Road. Suggestions for the new road name were: Dusty, Kirby, Windy
Hollow, Townline, Critter, Deer Path, and Woodchuck Road.
Marshall Road was once referred to as Cochran Road.
April 1939 “petitioners” of the Town of Enfield respectfully requested that the “Harvey Gray” Road be reconstructed from a graveled road to a road according to the laws of New York State.
Enfield Falls Hotel was not only famous for the falls from which it took its name, but for the broiled chickens that came from its kitchens (1866).
The last hotel keeper for the Enfield Falls Hotel was listed as Dwight Rumsey in 1894.
Only two standing structures in the Upper Treman State Park were a part of the Hamlet of Enfield Falls, the grist mill and miller’s cottage.
Warren Manning a landscape architect from Massachusetts was hired by Robert H. Treman in 1921 as a consultant to help design the Park area. How much design work he did is unclear he
was also a special consultant to the design staff of the Finger Lakes State Parks Commission.
Duncan-Bower house Enfield Falls (Treman Park area) - William Duncan sold his house in 1893 to his daughter Mary Bower. She used the home as a summer residence. She was one of the last
people to hold onto property in Enfield Falls before the Park formed. This property was seized by the government through right of eminent domain.
Dr. Minor McDaniel’s, Democrat, represented Tompkins County in the NYS Assembly. He practiced medicine both in Enfield Center and Ithaca. In November 1910 he stated that neither he
nor Attorney Tompkins could bring about road improvement in the Town of Newfield, or any other town, as that lay with state highway commission. He said he stood for an income tax for
the election of the United States senators by the people, and for the direct nominations for all elected officers. More than that he was for a thorough probe of graft and bribery at
Albany.. another story.
