The Town of Enfield Historians collection have residents diaries covering 1840 thru 1921. Most of these can be located on the laserfiche site for Enfield, www.townofenfield.org. Sue Thompson, Enfield Town Historian.The two of the diaries that mentioned winterholidays were that of Charles Wright (1854-1915) and Mary Jane Williams Marsh (1836 – 1917). Charles was a peddler and store owner in Enfield His diaries always started out with weather reports. December 25, 1882 – A dance to Wortmans Hall (Enfield Center) the Nobles Boys played. Note: John A. Noble (1875-1938) in Enfield he played with his brothers (Anson, Truman and Byron) for neighborhood dances and organized Noble’s Cornet Band. January 1, 1886 – A Dance to Wortman Hall. December 25 – Sleighing, A shooting match down to Enfield Falls. December 31 - A social to the Methodist Church for the Christian Church a dance to Alpine tonight. January 1, 1888 – Sam Bennett was buried today. (1823-1887).December 25 – No sleighing the roads are bear. Libbie and Elsie came up last night I didn’t get no present. It is warm tonight the “crick” is high. January 1, 1898 Quite a good trade today cash $7.95. No stage today. December 25 - Went to the Baptist church tonight house was full. December 31 – Went down to Francis Harvey (1856-1911) that is Asahel Harvey (1819-1894) widow. January 1, 1899 – Paid M.L. Harvey $4.00 for two weeks (Moses Harvey Hotel/Teeter Hotel Enfield Center).Went up to Walters (Charles brother n’ law Walter Ferguson 1846 – 1921) and got my dinner. Went to the Baptist church tonight and went over to Wm. Barbers. December 25 – Today is Xmas. M.L. Harvey and Will went up to Lizzies tonight. (Charle’s sister - Sarah Elizabeth Wright Ferguson 1847-1937). Harry Curry (1868-1939) was married tonight. (Elizabeth Rudy (1871-1957) of Trumansburg). December 31 – Sleighing good. Up to Methodist church and “herd” Wilcocks (Wilcox) preach. January 1, 1890 – Dance to Rumsey Corners (Trumbulls Corners). December 25 - Geo Scotts folks was over Tina, Owen, Anna and Libbie came. I went up to Owens tonight drove my horse up. December 26 – did not come home because of the snow. Owen patched his buffalo robe. Owen hitched up and drove to the depot. I got some cigar and molasses and had some molasses candy tonight snowed bout 10 in. Mary Jane Williams Marsh. Mary Jane’s diary reported on the weather and what her husband George (1837-1911) did during the day. On December 25 she always wrote she was making sausage to cut. December 31, 1901 snowed some went to Center Supper New Years. December 25 - up to Wheelers (Smith Family) Ruthie had Christmas tree. December 25, 1908 – went to the Wheelers for Xmas dinner, Ida and Hugh there. December 25, 1910 – Beautiful day for Christmas, Hulse, Mary, Ella and Ruth here. December 25, 1911 – Mr. Cook and wife, Mr and Mrs Curry, Mr and Mrs Baker and Mary here. December 25, 1913 – Ray and family and Olive to spend xmas. 1914 – I to Elias at Xmas time.
