HomeMy WebLinkAbout1976 enfield harvest festival historybusinesses, almcst as ^anv as you will find listed else-
where in this little folder. Before I relate those de-
tails, one moment to look at the Churches. The old O +t ` ' I
Presbyterian Church --which used to set in the front of . E
Haervl. s FeSbV dthe Cemetery iust south of Newharts store --was moved uo 1
to the corner and, with minor additions, became Wortman
Hall (John Wortman was Roger Brown's great-grandfather) / (
housing Mr, Wortmans' undertaking establishment, a Hall i
with stage and dance floor, and is presently Newhart's 76
store. The MethodistChurch was moved to it's present
site from Bostwick Corners, and the Baptist Church once
sat across the street from where tt is now. Moving a
Church was no problem to our ancestors, even though they
had no power equipment.
Enfield had two groceries, one of which was owned by tJl
Charlie Wright --the building is no longer there --and the \Vt9[f
other by A.L. Rumsey. The latter had a wagon to peddle
groceries through the town. There was a Cooperage, that
is where barrels were made; a blacksmith shop and wagon 0•
shop; a Harness maker; furniture factory; tannery, cigar /
bakers; cabinet shop; Mr. Wortman built h4s own coffins / J
for his undertaking business; and possibly a couple more /
that I have never heard about. Blacksmith shops were /
very popular, and there were several in town, including
one at Enfield Falls. Travel by horse and wagon was at
the rate of roughly 30 miles a day, so the services needed
had to be available at much closer distances than today y
when we can travel SS miles in an hour. Oh, yes, August
Laue had a Cobbler's shop, too, nearly forgot that one! Ilj 9
Entertainments were varied. Church sociables, home
talent plays, dances, benefits, to name a few. The
Churches were filled for Sunday morning and evening
services as well as Prayer Meetings on Wednesdays. Most \\1
of the social life centered around the Churches and the
Schools. A Trip by Train was a real event, most children
were thrilled by a ride in a ox cart, and a family outing
to Ithaca or Trumansburg took all day. Families visited f ! 11 •; `
each other for several days because it took so long to go i ,`. ; }
and come you had to stay a while to make the trip worth-
while. We nearly had train service here in Enfield, as
the remaining railroad bed will show. Just ask Harry
Willis or Nora Dodd to show you where it went. The big
Lehigh Valley bought it out to eliminate the competition.
Many more interesting things could be told about our
Town, space lacking, I will have to put them off until
another time. There is much more to cover --names of 'ohorec, by
people who came before us and are still vividly remembered
by the townspeople --but that is another story. r 64ie k C o m m cn i ty Council
