high school in Rochester, and when
19 went into the Army, Aerving for
3 ,years, receiving it discharge, and
being recalled to service in March, E
1942. He went overseas in Novem-
ber, 1943.
Sergeant Shea on Sept. 13, 1944,
in France, led. his squad a distance
of 175 yards from an enemy mortar
position which had temporaril s
halted his platoon.
"With his squad to cover him,"
the citation states, "Shea advanced
alone to within 10 yards of the
emplacement, fired six rounds and
killed the two German occupants.
In order to reach his objective, he
had "no alternative but to pass
through the heaviest point of the
enemy's concentration, with shells
bursting within 20 yards of him.
"The despatch of this enemy po-
sition and its team of two Ger-
mans made it possible for the pla-
toon to accomplish its objective of
Wiping out an intermediary enemy
defense; Sergeant Shea was killed
in subsequent action."
