,'Fire Caused By Lightning Destroys
I' Large Gould Barn At Christian Hill
— — I
A freak electrical storm was the
cause of a lire which totally destroy-
ed the barn and contents on the form-
er Charles Bower place ❑t Christian
Hill, now• owned by Clyde Gould of
District 15,
Liglitnipg struck the barn at about
6:45 p,m, last night and the barn
aided by the summer's crop of hay
and straw burned to the ground in an
Incrediably short time, Also destroyed i
woro several pieces of farm machinery
including al Case tractor, grain drill,
hay -loader, binder and other imple-
ments. Several cows were reported to
have been driven out but it is thought
that some veal calves lost their lives.
The loss was covered by insurance.
A shift in the direction of the wind
soon after the iue ata„ru undoubtedly I
saved the huu,e a; _iial s luld flames
were blown in another direction.
The barn on the Walter $teenberg '
farm

was on lire front the sparks but was
extinguished with little damage,
The Trumarlsburg Fire Depart-
inent responded to a call, but was able
to do but little,
A number of apple trees in a near
by orchard were ignited by the sparks
in various places and added to the
spectacular appearance of the fire. i
Due to the location of the fire it
was visible from a long distance in
all directions and drew what was
'probably the record breaking traffic
iflm for the town of Ulysses, Cars I
corning from four directions soon
blocked all roads and it required the
t,efforts of a state trooper and a num-
bbr of assistants to keep even one
lane of traffic open.
The large barn burning at night
with mill fulling "fade a most spec-
t:i; ular fire and many people staved
