Kuhns, Seaman, 1st Class, on leave from the Burring and Bench Work Dept., at Plant 1, is with the Seabees on the island of Tin- ian, and writes that he finds the letters from the Men- in -Services Committee real morale builders. H i s work day gen- e r all y runs from 8 : 00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. During his leisure time he R. E. Kuhns plays s e c and base with the battalion baseball team, and guard on the battalion b isketball team. Accompanied by tw,3 friends, he recently set out to collect some sea shells, and of this experience he wrote: "The shells are located out in the ocean anywhere from 25 feet to 500 feet, on the coral reefs. Most of the time they hide in little holes about six inches inside the coral. When swimming, you must ca,, ry a knife for security, a div- ing mask, plus a six-foot spear. You must also rear shoes, so the coral can't cut your feet, as the coral is poisonous. On one end of the spear there is a hook with which to hang onto the coral when you dive beneath the breakers, which are always over Your head and are sometimes eight feet in height. L> nless you hold on underwater, the waves may throw you 10 to 15 feet towards shore. While ducking the wares, you look for the shells. As my reward for all that work, I found 25 shells, and saw some V the most beautiful fish a per- son has ever seen." kips. 423 N.
