Source: This photo came from the files of the Newfield historical society. It
probably was clipped from the Ithaca Journal. Although undated, it must have
been taken in 1925 or 1926 as the obituary above for J. H. Rose lists his age at
death as 82, the same age
The old newspaper photograph to the left, shows some aging Civil War vets who
were honored and entertained at the Trumbull's Corner home of Mr. and Mrs.
Clarence Ryant. The paper identified the men and gave their ages. In the front
row, left to right are: Jonathan Underdown, 81; Nelson Brown, 80; J. H. Rose, 82;
and Aaron Walker, 77. In the back row, left to right: Aaron Poyer, 80; E.B. Miller,
82; and O. C. Wyman, 80. Aaron Poyer was the commander of the Gregg Post of
the G.A.R. in Newfield. J. H. Rose is discussed in the obiturary above. Aaron
Walker, of Danby, had been a prisoner in the infamous Andersonville prison for
11 months during the war.

Obituary – September 28, 1918 Trumansburg Freepress
The funeral of Roderic Byrum who passed away suddenly Sept. 20, was
held from late home in Enfield at 2 o’clock, September 23. He had been
about his usual tasks and in good spirits, so though in failing health his
condition had not been such as to cause anxiety and his death which was
caused by heart failure came as a great shock to his friends. He daughter
found him in the barn where the end had evidently come quickly and
without a struggle.
Roderic Byrum was born in Enfield Sept. 4, 1844, and was united in
wedlock Feb. 11, 1874 to Elizabeth Wallenbeck who passed away Feb. 18,
1916. With the exception of about four years which was spent in California
and the army, Mr. Byrum had spent his life in this immediate vicinity and
the many friends at his funeral was a notable expression of the respect
which was held for him the community. He enlisted when seventeen years
of age as private in Co. E 64th N.Y.V. He was confined in hospital at
Harper’s Ferry, Va., in Sept. 1862, and after two months spent there was
honorably discharged on account of disability. He re-enlisted in Jan. 1863,
17
in Co. K 50th N.Y. Engineers and took active part in the battles of Fair Oaks,
Wilderness Cold Harbor, Front of Petersburg, Hatchers Run, Weldon R.R.,
and Poplar Grove Church besides doing considerable scouting,
skirmishing, guard and garrison duty. He was discharged June 13, 1865, at
Ft. Berry, VA. One comrade, Walter Ferguson of Enfield, was able to attend
the funeral.
Mr. Barium is survived by one brother Joseph, who is also a soldier and by
two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Hamblin of Mecklenburg and Mae, who lived at
home.
Rev. Peterson of Enfield officiated at the funeral services and burial took
place at Mecklenburg with Wm. H. Jones Jr. in charge.

Mrs. Priscilla Griffin for the burial of her husband Benjamin Griffin
GRIFFIN, Benjamin L., Enfield.--William H. GRIFFIN, a son of William and a
native of Westchester county, N.Y. was a soldier in the war of 1812 and drew a
bounty. He came to Enfield about 1816, followed farming, and died here in the
spring of 1868. He married Joanna BYRON, who died March 22, 1873, aged
nearly seventy-four. Their children were Deborah (deceased), Hetty (deceased),
George (deceased), Mary Stephen (deceased,) Benjamin L., Albert and Jane.
43
Benjamin L. Griffin: August 27, 1863, enlisted in Co. F. 140th N.Y Vols. With his
company he joined the regiment at Culpepper, and during the ensuing seven
months participated in eleven engagements, including the Wilderness.
June 2, 1864, at the battle of Cold Harbor, he was taken prisoner, and for five
months and eighteen days was incarcerated in the rebel prison pen at
Andersonville where he suffered indescribable privations and became emaciated
to almost a living skeleton.
In November he was paroled and on Christmas day reached home on a furlough.
Sixty days later he returned to Annapolis and was transferred to Co. K,: 5th N. Y.
Zouaves, with which he served, notwithstanding his ill health in the closing
scenes of the war around Richmond, being in the front line on the day of LEE's
surrender. He then went with his regiment to Hart's Island, where here he
remained until his discharge. August 21, 1865.
Since the war Mr. Griffin has been an invalid and for nine years has not left his
bed. The terrible exposure in prison completely ruined his once robust health,
shattered his once strong physique, and undermined his once hardy constitution.
Excepting two years spent in Westchester county, he has always resided in
Enfield.
Born: Enfield, April 2, 1832, was reared a farmer.
Died: at his home in Enfield Centre, Dec. 22, 1897. He had been a great
sufferer from rheumatism from which he has been bed-ridden for the past
fourteen years, nearly every joint in his body being drawn out of shape. Funeral
services were held from his late residence on the 24th.
Buried: Presbyterian Cemetery - Enfield Center

1862-1865
Charles T. Kelsey - Registered September 25, 1880, Enfield; born in Enfield;
graduated Jefferson Medical College, of the State of New York, February 3, 1874.
Dr. Charles T. Kelsey was a native of Enfield for 65 years. During
the war he was surgeon in 64th New York Regiment of Volunteers and one of the
wealthiest residents of the town. He had a wife, daughter and 2 sons. One of the
sons graduated from Cornell University and the other attended. Dr. Kelsey died
October 8, 1893. He died from injuries he received during a horse and wagon
accident. Grant Curry, who worked in the D.L. and W. Freight Department in
Ithaca, eye witnessed Dr. Kelsey's death, along with Dr. Kelsey's hired man who
was in the wagon with the doctor. Grant was visiting his father's farm, Harrison
Curry. He was walking along the road when he heard a carriage and horse behind
him. He turned to see who it was. It was Dr. Kelsey, he saw the doctor reach out
of the carriage and with the butt end of the whip he touched the horse. He was
trying to brush the horseflies off the horse. The horse became frightened and
started running. The doctor reached out to get a better hold of the reins when the
horse kicked. It struck the doctor in the breast knocking the doctor out of the
wagon. The wagon overturned and smashed. The doctor's hired man was unhurt.
Dr. Kelsey died before help from Dr. Charles Vernooy could be brought to him. He
suffered 3 broken ribs on one side and 9 on the other side, plus internal injuries.

April 26th 1904 Mr J.H.Rose for the burial of his son William Rose
Source: This photo came from the files of the Newfield historical society. It
probably was clipped from the Ithaca Journal. Although undated, it must have
been taken in 1925 or 1926 as the obituary above for J. H. Rose lists his age at
death as 82, the same age
The old newspaper photograph to the left, shows some aging Civil War vets
who were honored and entertained at the Trumbull's Corner home of Mr. and
Mrs. Clarence Ryant. The paper identified the men and gave their ages. In the
front row, left to right are: Jonathan Underdown, 81; Nelson Brown, 80; J. H.
Rose, 82; and Aaron Walker, 77. In the back row, left to right: Aaron Poyer, 80;
E.B. Miller, 82; and O. C. Wyman, 80. Aaron Poyer was the commander of the
Gregg Post of the G.A.R. in Newfield. J. H. Rose is discussed in the obiturary
above. Aaron Walker, of Danby, had been a prisoner in the infamous
Andersonville prison for 11 months during the war.
