Especially thank you for volunteering to research and write to be included in the 1996 Enfield History Book. I remind you that our Town Historian, Jack Hubbell, has endless files regarding aspects of the Town of Enfield, and is very willing to help you in locating possible information on your research project. You may reach him at 273-6470 to make an appointment with him. The deadline for submission of manuscripts for the various chapters is If for any reason you feel you cannot meet this deadline, or if you have other concerns about your participation in this project, please contact Sue Thompson (272-6412) as soon as possible. Manuscript chapters should be typed, double-spaced, with 1 inch margins. There is no limit to the pages written, the editors reserve the right to edit your manuscript as appropriate. A hard - copy and a computer disk [labeled with type of computer and program used] copy should be handed in at the deadline date of There is no limit to the illustrations/photographs for your chapter. All illustrations/photographs will be accepted. The editors reserve the right to edit your illustrations/photographs as appropriate. Please supply captions and include subject of picture, date (if possible, otherwise approximate), identifications of people if relevant. Number your pictures with your chapter 1 August 19, 1993 names, Transportation #3. Please place a cue in your chapter for each picture. If the cue doesn't fit in the text itself, then note it in the margin. The text should contain evervthina the author expects his/her readers to learn about his/her subiect. The material should be presented in a logical pattern, selecting what is essential and omitting what is nonessential or repetitious. Chronologically would be the best order - starting from the beginning of your organization, business, government, etc. to the end or current use. Attached is a list of suggested research for certain chapters of our book. This may help you in your outlining of your selected chapter. Footnotes: You will need to document your sources. If you quote directly or if you use someone else's material, you should credit the source. Use footnote numbers in the text and then list your footnotes separately at the end of the manuscript. Be sure that you include the name of the author, the title of the work (book, article), the place of publication (city, publishing house, magazine or newspaper, including volume number and date), date of publication, and page number(s). If a work has more than one volume, list the number of volumes and be sure to indicate which volume your source comes from. When in doubt, put in all the bibliographical material. We can always take it out if it's not necessary. Keep your footnotes brief and concise. Biblioaraohv: Include the same material you use in footnotes. Style is slightly different. List author first, last name first. Separate material with periods. ex: Brown, John. The Indian. Ithaca: Dewitt Historical Society of Tompkins county, 1963. Pp. 36-46. If you interview people for "oral history" (their personal experiences) don't forget: Name of person interviewed (interviewee) Address of where the interview was done Address of where the interviewee lives Date of interview Name of person doing the interview (interviewer) Oral history, gives your article a touch of reality (really being there). If you need help in the writing of your project after all your facts, etc. are gathered together please give me a call. We will arrange for someone to help with this. 2 d August 19, 1993 I would like to encourage you to join our Committee (even for a few minutes) each month. Meetings are held every 4th Tuesday each month - 7:30 p.m. - Enfield Town Hall. Jack Hubbell, Enfield Town Historian, has arranged to be at the Enfield Town Hall every 3rd Tuesday night (7:30-9:00 pm) to allow those interested to do research for the "New Enfield Historical Book". The book will be published during 1995 for the Birthday Celebration in 1996. Please keep in touch, either by attending a few meetings or a telephone call to myself. I will certainly be keeping in touch with you on this project. If you at anytime decide you would rather not do this research please let us know immediately. we will need to find someone else to help us out. This may be used as a reference in research the other military lots. 2. Names of roads in Enfield. a. how were roads laid out in the town b. what was the reference number for each road C. where did the names for the roads originate from d. exactly when did road name signs appear e. People at one time also used the Clock System Maps which were all referenced by numbers any information which can be found 3. HISTORICAL MARKERS IN THE TOWN OF ENFIELD - NEED A DESCRIPTION OF EACH MARKER - PLACE, EVENT, ETC. B. Below is a list of questions to be answered for each corner community. Additional detailed questions noted under each section. 1. What area did and does this cover - use house number addresses for all descriptions. District #1 - (Tubbs) located on the north-east corner of Aiken and Podunk Road. It appears at this corner on the 1866 map. Annexed to District #1 Town of Ulysses July 13, 1945. District #2 - (Rolfe) located on the east side of Van Dorn road north of Route 79. Appears on the 1866 map in that area. District #3 - (Ulysses - Enfield) this district probably would have included property in the north-east corner of the town. Need more information! District #4 - (Millers) located on the west side of Halseyville road just north of Route 79. Appears on the 1966 map at that site. Annexed to District #6 on January 12, 1916. This annexation was appealed and ordered void on October 9, 1917. District #5 - (Stone School House) located east side of Applegate road south of Route 79. Also appears on the 1866 map. Annexed to District #6 on July 12, 1916. District #6? - (Enfield Center) appears on the 1866 map at the north-west corner of Rothermich and Fish road. Later located on Enfield Center road west of Route 327 across from the Methodist Church. A two room school house. District #6? - (Ulysses - Enfield) located north-east corner of Jacksonville road and trade[[ road. Appears on the 1866 map at this location. District #7 - (Woodard) located north-east corner Woodard and Hines road. Appears on the 1866 map at this location. District #8 - (Purdy) located south-east corner of Bostwick and Colegrove road. Also appears on the 1866 map. District #9 - (Rollison) (Enfield -Hector) located south-east corner of Route 79 and Black Oak road. It is at this location on the 1866 map. Some papers indicate that the district became part of the Odessa Central Rural School on September 25, 5 JUNE 15, 1993 1943. BUT the New York State Commissioner of Education made it part of Central School District #1 of the Towns of Ulysses, Tompkins County, covert, Seneca County, and Hector, Schuyler County on July 18, 1947. (A story here???). District #10 - (The Little Red School) located on the east side of Connecticut Hill road between Griffin and Rumsey Hill road. District #11 - Harvey Hill) located north side of Harvey Hill road west of Route 327. Appears on the 1866 map. District #12 - this probably was a Town of Hector district with Enfield children attending. May have been at the end of Harvey Hill road in the Town of Hector. District #13 - (Christian Hill) located south-east corner of Waterburg and Iradell road. Appears on the 1866 map at this site. Annexed to District #1 Ulysses September 2, 1941. District #14 - (Budds) located near Budd Cemetery on the south side of Gray road. Appears on the 1866 map. District #17 - (Saxton Hill) located south-west corner of Cayutaville Road (or Saxton Hill Road) and Black Oak Road (or Connecticut Hill Road) in the Town of Newfield. Annexed to District #12 Newfield September 12, 1916. The above annexed to Newfield Central School August 1, 1941. VI. Chapter 15 - Military BELOW IS A LIST OF QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED FOR EACH WAR IF POSSIBLE. A. LISTING OF QUALIFYING DRAFTEES FOR MILITARY DRAFTING - TOWN HAS A LISTING OF 1851 PLEASE ADD TO BOOK. 1. list of persons involved in wars who resided/reside in town a. name, military commission: going in and out; univregiment; military awards, anything that is and seems important b. If individual names are not available a total of people involved. what is the policy regarding listing of military names? d. were persons involved enlisted in the same regiment/unit.
