HomeMy WebLinkAboutbook update august 24 1994ENFIELD COMMEMORATIVE COMMITTEE 5125/94 - PAGE 2 Enfield History Book update August 24, 1994: by Sue Thompson I have gathered together a lot of information for the book and placed this information into hopefully the appropriate chapters. A lot of the information has come from various items I have had for many years, etc. Various items were written by members of the community and their names have of course been placed on the articles as authors. It may seem like I have done a lot of the writing. I have. People here do not respond very well when asked to do research and writing. I therefore am approaching the subjects for chapters by asking peoples opinions and ideas on what has been written. My hope for an Enfield History book has been too long in the making for me to allow the idea to fall through the cracks and not be done at all because people do not want to be involved or they are too busy. One question I have is when does the committee want a copy of all the information collected? Do you want to wait until we have everything? The people who should be receiving copies of this rough version of the book will be: Sue Thompson, Gary Fisher, Wilma Fisher, Hilda Amberge, Jack Hubbell, Ellie Hobbie, Bertha Hubbell Note of reminder - We will be needing pictures to go with these chapters. If while reading this chapter update outline something - an idea to add or subtract a subject comes to mind please write it down. CHAPTER UPDATES Chapter 1 - Jack Hubbell has turned in a partial time line listing he will be adding more information to this time line when more chapters are written and handed in. more. Chapter 2 - Bill Basset has turned in his geology chapter but will be adding a little bit Chapter 3 - ore -Iroquois and Iroouois - no written material from Ellie Hobbie yet Chapter 4 - A variety of information has been collected in regard to the cross road communities in Enfield. I have added a copy of the town census chart and figures which were given to me by Jack Hubbell. This will give the reader an idea of how the population in the town has fluctuated throughout the years. Chapter 5 - 1 have written the chapter on Enfield Falls. It still needs work and questions answered. As a note -- Bill Basset did not include this in his geology chapter. Chapter 6 - Buildings - no written material from Ellie Hobbie yet Chapter 7 - transportation written by myself needs to be reviewed. Note -- Randy ENFIELD COMMEMORATIVE COMMITTEE 5/25194 - PAGE 2 Warden mentioned the Catskill Turnpike in his postoffice article to need compare information and add or subtract. Chapter 8 - Agriculture - no written material from Gary Fisher yet Chapter 9 - I have a variety of listings of businesses in Enfield old and new and will be adding more than what is listed in the chapter division index attached to this update. I have a partial listing of physicians which practiced in Enfield with a few "doctor" stories, plus the story Helen Smith wrote on Louis Doc Humphrey. I hope to track down a more complete list of physicians through the tompkins county medical society. Chapter 10 - the arts - I have information to write a story regarding Ruth Place and her rug weaving. Need other suggestions for this chapter. Chapter 11 - Political government - was told that Etta Grey has written this chapter and I will receive a copy 9/24/94 Civic Service - Fire company - we have one article and a time line. Jack H. suggested not using the article as the time line covers everything. Sue T. thinks it needs a few written explanations on some facts given. Ladies Auxiliary - written and handed in by Annabelle Seamon. Postoffice and Postmasters - written and handed in by Randy Warden Communitv council - Helen Jackson is working on this section. She has been collecting information to write. There is a meeting planned for September to include those who worked with the community council throughout its life time. I told Helen we would definitely need a written article by December of 94. Chapter 12 - Reliaion - churches -cemeteries. Our author has moved to Washington, D.C. I have contacted here today and await an answer. If she has not and does not plan on writing this chapter. We will go with what material Helen Smith and Sue T. has gathered and written. Chapter 13 - Education First Schools - I have written a general overview of the first schools in Enfield plus added the information that Jack has received from his surveys of schools. Hilda Amberge has also written a nice article on Nobles schools house which has been placed here. Elementary School - Mary Cole has written this part. She has asked Nan Brown, School Principal to review the article I should have the article by September 1. Chapter 14 - Social - Fraternal Organizations Grange - Leah Carpenter - I have not been able to get hold of her to see if she has done any work on the grange. The material has been written Leah is adding and subtracting to it. Baseball - Roger Brown wrote a nice story about baseball in Enfield. I have added this in the book. 8-24-94 - 3 ENFIELD COMMEMORATIVE COMMITTEE 5/25/94 - PAGE 2 Bov Scouts - Pat Doughtery and Lanny Clark are working on this! Girl Scouts - no one - Sue T. will call current groups for history Teen arouos - no one - Sue T. will call current groups for history 4=H - no one - Sue T. will call current groups for history Senior Citizens - no one Mothers Club - no written material from Wilma Fisher yet W.C.T.U. - Sue T. has been written but wished she could find more information on the local Enfield organization. K.O.T.M. - Sue T. has information needs to write Pias ear aroup - needs more information may have to eliminate. There is mention of his group in the moving or obtaining of this first old town hall. Chapter 15 - Military - Sue T. has been working on the civil war section - since there are no other volunteers I will come up with as much as I can for the others. Do we want a partial listing vs no listing of people involved in the different wars. Will people/families be upset if we do not list everyone? Chapter 16 - Biblioaraohv - most of the listings here are what I have used. Do we add authors sources here in the bibliography or at the end of each chapter?
