The Stone House – In 1822 Keturah (Dunlap) and Charles Woodward, who originally
came from England, built a house one -mile west of the hamlet of Enfield Falls (Stone
House Road). The house was built of stone gathered from the surrounding area, of
staunch beams with mortises and tenons fir mly held by hand-whittled wooden
pegs. Walls of the house were two feet thick, with a slight taper as they went up. This
width made it possible for deep window seats. There were four fireplaces with simple
mantle design and random-width plank ceilings in the second-floor rooms. Located at
the back of the house was the kitchen. It contained its own fireplace with a wrought
iron crane in the fireplace to be used for cooking. The house has always been referred
to as the “Old Stone House.” A daughter (Elizabeth Woodward) was born to Charles
and Keturah in 1828. The Woodwards eventually had 13 children.
