The Next Enfield Water Protection Committee Meeting is planned for Monday May 20 at
6:30 pm, via Zoom. Please mark your calendars.
Mary Julien (MJ) Source Water Protection Specialist from NYSRWA has left her position. A
new person has not yet been hired to replace her. Her CEO, Jamie Herman
<Herman@nyruralwater.org> is our contact person until the new person is hired.
We do not have any updates on the status of the DWSP2 Plan. Becky has contacted the
DEC to see if they have any more information for us.
Water Testing: We have not done any testing for this quarter yet. None of the committee
members have seen any manure spreading activity on the land near the test sites. We
decided to wait until later in the quarter to test after we see some activity occurring, or by
the second week in June (before the June Town Board meeting). Tom Joyce has the water
containers for this next test.
The Sustainability committee is hosting the next “Trash Talks” in Enfield on October 28.
Everyone is invited to attend for updates on the Town’s activities related to sustainability.
The Town board is continuing to look at revisions to the Site Plan regulations and the
Planning Board is starting to review to Comprehensive Plan. A committee will be formed to
start the process of revising the plan. Interested community members are encouraged to
join the committee.
Becky shared the presentation she gave to the Town Board about a needs assessment
survey related to the feasibility of the potential for municipal water in Enfield in the
future. The board has asked this committee to define who should get a survey, selecting
priority areas in the town. They also want us to define what information we are asking, to try
to get a sense if the residents have any interest in municipal water in the future. This would
be a very long term process and a survey is only one small step in defining the scope of the
need for municipal water in some areas of the town.
The committee decided that the first step is to look at our data from the Aquifer Study, the
2021 survey and the information Steve Winkley collected for our Water Protection Law.
From this information, we will pick the priority regions of our town for receiving the survey.
Attached you will find copies of the presentations and information Steve Winkley collected
to use as the basis for our decisions. Please come to the next meeting with ideas about
where we might send the surveys.
From Steve Winkley:
two online maps for your use. They are
at: https://arcg.is/yqKm and https://arcg.is/19mX5b0
The first is for the Enfield Creek Valley aquifers and the second is for bedrock water wells.
Other attachments of Steve’s presentations are below. The Storm Water maps have been
sent separately. Let me know if you need more information.
The committee also discussed the fact that this information may go hand in hand with the
updated Comprehensive plan by helping us see how people feel about development and
industry coming into our town.
Tom Joyce created a draft of a brochure for education of community members about our
committee and how to protect our drinking water. We discussed the content and possible
edits. He will work with Peter and Harry on editing the draft. We will discuss this further at
our next meeting.
