ENFIELD COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS
YES, THERE WILL BE A SUMMER CAMP:
UNITED WAY
of Tompkins County
This year's summer camp will run from July 5 through August 11. The camp
will operate Monday through Friday mornings, 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, at the
Alternative Community School, 111 Chestnut Street, Ithaca. Children 3
years of age and up are eligible to attend. Arts and Crafts, sports, Drama
Activities, Science and Nature Projects are some of the programs that are
being planned. A lunch program will also be available. This year's camp
promises to be a good time for all. A voluntary donation is requested.
Mary Ann Burgess-Puhalka will be our Director this summer. If you notice
a resemblance, she is Marnie Kirchgessner's sister but well qualified for
the position and willing to work for what we pay! Lori Churchill who plan-
ned to return took a better paying job as did Judy Switzer.
We look forward to the return of Sonja Sereiber, Rhonda Connors and Denise
Wells. We will be welcoming a variety of new staff and a varied program
is planned.
Bus transportation is planned.
tenative ---- tenative ---- tenative --- schedule as follows:
1st Stop 8:20 - the Old Fire House, Enfield Main Road
2nd Stop 8:30 - Upper Treman Park Entrance
3rd Stop 8:35 - Enfield Main Road - corners of Bostwick and Harvey
Hill Rd. West on Harvey Hill to Townline.
4th Stop - corner of Enfield Center and Townline - proceed to
Mecklenburg Road East to
5th Stop - Sandy Creek to site.
Transportation route was determined by responses received to canvass and
requirement by the Health Department for an individual with 1st aid to be
on the bus.
Bus transportation is limited to 1 bus and it will be supervised by staff.
Volunteer, guests and most staff will not be transported. You must be pre-
registered to be transported. Please state preferred stop. On first day
come to tenative bus stop with children early and be prepared to wait.
Thank you!
Last year the camp had a full enrollment. Be sure that your child can get
in by sending in the application form as soon as possible.

• TEENS
Summer employment is limited but many hiring decisions have not yet been
made because of our change in location. We do not know how many children
to plan for, so if interested in employment, contact M. Kirchgessner or
D. Lovelace.
Only volunteers who attend all mandatory training for junior counselors
will be permitted to "work" at camp. Hopefully, this will prevent problems
we experienced last year with more volunteers than participants in some
age groups.
SWIM PROGRAM
We want to thank Denny Hubbell and all the Enfield Firemen for their
generous donation of the use of the pond for swim lessons. We are working
with the Health Department to obtain certification of that site. We need
people handy with hammers to help erect a life guard chair, etc. to make
the site comply with regulations.
We have located 2 individuals certified and willing to teach lessons: as
now required by the Health Department regulations.
Swimming will start July 5, if the pond is certified. Erica Dolgoff will
life guard the pond for "free swim" - 1 pm to 3 pm daily. We will encourage
• family swim (children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult,
parent or guardian) Tuesday through Friday. Monday's will be a special
TEEN SWIM DAY.
Lessons will begin at 4 with Michelle Garand instructing Red Cross cert-
ified lessons. She will test on July 5 & 6. (Rain Day July 7). Families
who's last name begin A thru L, July 5, 4-7 and M thru 2, July 6, 4-7 and
assign to classes. Bring Red Cross cards with you. A $15 - fee will be
charged for this program with a $45 - fee maximum/family. Fee's will be
waived if a family member assists with pond certification related work.
Contact M. Kirchgessner or D. Lovelace for details. If interested, ADULT
SWIM PROGRAM will be offered.

• PROGRAM UPDATES
After School Program
Dianne Lovelace, our current Program Administrator, is conducting an
evaluation of our after school Day Care Program. Dianne is tenatively
scheduled to present her evaluation at the July 12 meeting to be held at
M. Kirchgessner's, 191 Enfield Main Road. If you have comments or input
"I want the program" - "It stinks" anything -- Please contact Dianne.
Written comments would be most helpful. Send to D. Lovelace - 23 Fish
Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
Enrichment Program
Our Enrichment Program can use additional ideas and planning for our "New"
format (2 days per week). We have several individuals interested in
participating in our Program Committee. Would anyone like to Chair?
Rob Groff has expressed interest in returning in the fall and was extremely
well received by participants. We hope to hire a creative dance movement
teacher in the fall.
DeCentralization Grant
Joe Salzano came to our enrichment program and performed with several other
• musicians; giving the children and some participants a wonderful oppor-
tunity to experience music by listening, playing and learning. This was
a wonderful program, made available to us by a decentralization grant
from New York State and now administred by the Chemung Council for the
Arts. We plan to duplicate this program in the fall because it was
received so well.
Even as we go to press .............

On a sadder note.......
The entire community is aware of the tragic accident that occurred to the
Cudlin family. The entire community is being asked to participate in an
old-fashioned help your neighbor, chicken barbecue and fundraising event
for the family: July 1 at Newharts Lodge. We hope to see you there! If
you cannot attend, but would like to make a donation, they can be sent to
D. Lovelace, 23 Fish Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
The United Way of Tompkins County each year contributes significantly to
Enfield Community Council Programs including this newsletter. This year
because of our need to move the Day Camp "out of Enfield" we have made a
request for emergency funds to assist with the cost of busing. The United
Way has always tried to assist us and be responsive to our needs. Each
year we try to respond in kind by participating in their fundraising
campaign to reach out to people who are not solicited at work. We are
looking for a campaign Chair. Krys Cail did this most recently and was
very effective. Please volunteer by calling Marnie Kirchgessner or the
United Way office. A list of persons to be solicited and training is
provided by the United Way.
Plans are already under way to make this year's Harvest Festival, bigger,
better and more traditionally oriented then in the past. We would like
to encourage special participation of the Grange Member Senior Citizens
and 4-H Clubs to sell produce and bring animals and pets for a petting
ZOO. Could this be a project you or your group would like to commit to?
Call Brenda Smith, newly elected Vice President, at 272-5826 with ideas.
The Community Council is planning a plant sale and handmade crafts made
made by participants in teen and afterschool programs. If you are willing
to make pickles or jelly for us to sell, call Brenda.

Our thanks to everyone who returned duplicate copies of our newsletter
(especially John Smith!) sent to their nonexistant addresses. By fall
we intend to be computerized so errors may occur this time too. Repre-
sentatives of the community council will be "riding the roads" to develop
a list in conjunction with voter registration records. Many thanks to
Jack Hubbell who is Enfield's housing enumerator for all his wonderful
lists to date.

The Community Council would like to resume publication of it's baby sitters
list. If interested, send your name and address, phone and age with your
interest in writing to Enfield News B M. Kirchgessner, 191 Enfield Main
Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
Teens wanted to form craft group to work under adult supervision on craft
projects. Projects will be sold at the Harvest Festival to benefit Community
Council programing. Contact Marnie if interested.
Recently Community Council Members have been contacted about a preschool
this fall and/or playgroups for prekindergarten children. We are committed
to programing for this age group and have some funding from the United Way
for this purpose and we have people willing to make it happen.
Etta Gray, Town Supervisor, gave us some good news when she shared that
the town board moved to pay for repairs to the old fire house to bring it
up to code. It's our intention to restart this fall even if it means
rotating from house to house until repairs are completed. Please call or
write if you have and are willing to add new members to playgroups or
would like to start one. More details in our fall newsletter.
To all our other Community organizations, we are sorry about the"short"
publication date, but we wanted to have information about summer programing
out before the end of school. And it was so late coming together.
Most of the town residents are aware a citizen committee has been formed
to consider issues involved in planning for the town of Enfield. Because
of our tight deadline, we did not receive any comments. We would welcome
any articles on this topic for our next newsletter to be issued in late
• August or early September. Please send to Enfield News. Thanks.

Darr "field Barden,
Did you know that Enfield has a building code? It dells aid this letter
will try to answer some questuNa about the Wilding code.
Mat is tails building code?
This ,s actually the New York State Oniforin Fire Prevention and Building
Code. This code is a met of standards and regulation governing the
constriot.on sort maintenance of cri,'are and public buildings. The code
coven such things as: structural elements. apace requirements, fire safety

Chief code is to insure that all frostructio, work done in Nov york State IS
done unifomly and to minumm safety staedards.
My do.. Enfield participate in the WS Building Cads?
The enforcement of the code is a state law. But rho state gave each
locality the option of doing Chair own enforcement. Enfield elected to take
rmmpansibil.ity for adsuhiatering the Code through the building code
enforcement officer that is hired by the town board.
My should I conform to this code?
the nost obviga reason is the $250.00 fire that may be levied for non-

Dear Enfield Residents,
Another su®er Is upon us and that means chat the budget formation and
review process is started at the Tompkins Councy Board of Representatives.
Again this vest, we are faced with a potential double digit tax increase.
As you may have heard, we have passed a 5f maxims increase for doparc-
eencal budgets. So how and why are we facing a double digit tax increase?
From the mandated items passed on by the state and by the loss of con fonds
from the state and federal governments. Again we are faced With tough
der tstons on how to fund programs clot are necessary with only a reasonable
tax increase. The gravch of now assessment which no really helps cake
care of these increases does not appear to be enough again this year.
These are cough decision time. but somehow we always make is through
the process.

THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF ENFIELD CENTER
We urge anyone without a home church at present to join us
for Sunday Morning Worship at 11 A.M., with Sunday School
activities for the children during the pastor's sermon.
Our pastor, the Reverend Wilson Small, and his wife Pauline,
who has an outstanding solo singing voice, have brought joy
and inspiration to our congregation. We hope you will stop
in to hear them.
The Church's Food Distribution continues it's eighth year
in Enfield on alternate Thursday afternoons from 4-5 P.M.,
with members of the congregation filling grocery bags with
food which David Owens contributes his truck to bring from
the Elmira Food Bank. We thank the many people who contrib-
ute about two dollars per family every two weeks to make
this effort possible. Your contributions would be welcomed.
In addition, those who have a one-time food shortage from
sudden loss of job, fire, illness, delay in receiving food
stamps, etc., may telephone 273-5682 or 272-6518 for help
with the emergency.
Please call either of the above numbers also if you are
interested in working in the Community Garden across the
road from the church building. We have seeds and plants.
