Enfield Community Currents
Brought to you by the Enfield Community Council
2020 January—March Free
You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You
can steer yourself any direction you choose.
Dr. Suess
As we approach the New Year I want to express my hope that 2020 treats
us all well. This year has seen the loss of some wonderful people very
unexpectedly. I hope we can all remember to treat each other (and ourselves)
better. You never know when someone will be taken from us and leave a hole
in our lives. Make that call, send that email, or drop by and visit; those things
say I’m thinking of you. I send warm wishes to all.
I hope our elected officials remember their oaths to serve our community
(and the community’s wishes). I know from the Enfield PTA and this council
that sometimes what you want is NOT what everyone else wants. As an
elected official it can be hard to set aside your feelings and do what the
majority wants. Special interests are tearing our country apart, I want better for
our Enfield.
I will be doing a Snowmobile Safety Course January 4th, 2020. It is being
held at the Horseheads Snowmobile Club. The course is free and lunch is
provided. For more information, please call me at 607-279-4702 or email me at
cbailey525@yahoo.com. You must be ten years old or older to take the course.
Enfield will be celebrating its bicentennial in 2021. The Town Board has
asked ECC to make plans for the celebration. If you are interested in helping
out, call Ann Rider at 607-277-3478.
As always, take care of each other. Check on your neighbors, be kind,
smile at people you see; all these things make the world a better place. Your
smile could brighten the day of someone who really needs it. You have no idea
what someone else may be going through.
Any business that would like to place an advertisement in the newsletter
should call me at 607-279-4702.
Our Next two ECC meetings are on January 23rd and February 27th.
Everyone please stay safe,
Cortney Bailey

News from Enfield Elementary School
https://www.https://www.ithacacityschools.org/enfield
Wow, is 2019 really almost over already?! At Enfield Elementary School we’re learning about solids, liquids and
gasses as the rain turns to snow and puddles turn to ice. Our annual Winter Breakfast is coming up on December
20th. We welcome all of our families to come in and have breakfast with their students and celebrate the season, the
school, and what we’re learning. Breakfast starts at 8am for Pre-K and Kindergarten with the rest of the grade levels to
follow. We’ll be serving eggs and sausage as well as some fresh fruit and vegetables.
Speaking of vegetables, December 20th is also the date of our first ever Kids Free Farmers Market. Through our
partnership with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier every student in the school will be able to take a selection of fresh
vegetables home with them. Our wonderful 4th and 5th grade Green Team has been hard at work making tote bags.
We’ll repeat this farmers market for our students once a month during the school day for the remainder of the year.
We’ll be looking for feedback from our families and students to see how to tweak it going forward.
Our small but mighty PTA supports the development of creative programming in our school and our community.
Please check out their website at www.enfieldpta.org for updates. Please consider supporting the PTA and joining us
on the first Monday of the month from 5:30-7:00. We start with pizza and conversation at 5:30.
We collect Box Tops for Education. Here is the site for participating products: www.boxtops4education.com/earn.
If you have some, Judy Fernandes in our main office will gladly take them off your hands!

J.C. Weatherby and the Stallion Black Prince
According to a 1892 legal document in the Town of Enfield vault there once lived a stallion called Black Prince.
This stallion was owned by J.C. (John Charles) Weatherby. According to the document Floyd F. Nobles of the Town of
Enfield owed John seven dollars for services of John’s stallion. The description of Black Prince was a Sorrel Mare,
weighed about 1150 pounds, white feet and blaze marking on his face. He was owned by G.V. (George) Smith for a
number of years. George Smith was a neighbor of the Weatherby family, according to the 1863 map of Enfield.
Through out many years it was listed that pedigree horses were brought to his farm for “service” but there was no
mention of Black Prince.
Charles served as Justice of the Peace in the Town of Enfield from 1921 – 1927. According to articles in a few
local newspapers Charles won many awards for his horses in local agricultural fairs. He was also a large sheep breeder
selling registered pure bred Delaine sheep in the state. Charles supplied car load shipments of rams for Texas and
export to South Africa. He was a member of the Tompkins County Farm Bureau and served as Vice President. Charles
was a gold star member of the Enfield Valley Grange. He served on the Tompkins County Victory Loan Committee in
1919 representing Enfield along with: Frank S. Stevenson, chairman, D.H. Bailey publicity man; E.S. Bagley, Ora
Beardsley, Nelson brown, Herbert Bailey, Hall Bailey, Herbert Curry, Albert Colegrove, A.D. Chrisjohn, Grant Curry,
General George A. Dodd,Willard Freese, Kirk Fowler, Harry Haven, Silas Hubbell, James Hine, Willia Hamblin, Gillett
Hausner, F.T. Jackson, Harry Lanning, Addison McCoy, Daniel Mitchell, George Personius, Rev. Peterson, John
Russell, Henry Rothermich, Darwin Rumsey, Walter Steinberg, Dana Tubbs, Abe Updyke, and Fred Rumsey.
In May 1933 Charles was reported as a patient in the Robert Packer hospital in Sayre Pennsylvania when fire broke
out. The fire destroyed the hospital with 224 patients saved one lost his life. The section burned had been built over a
period of 30 years. A new larger clinic which had recently been built was saved along with the nurses home and
children’s ward. Charles was 82 when he passed away in October 1946.
Historic Ithaca and the Tompkins County Historical Commission is funding the production of a series of booklets
about Tompkins County History, and one will focus on Tompkins County cemeteries, entitled “Permanent
Residents." The plan is for the booklet to feature a collection of short biographical essays of people buried at local
cemeteries. I will be submitting two articles one on Jannette Wickham daughter of Henrietta Wickham of Enfield Falls
Hotel fame and John Applegate who helped organize the Town of Enfield and surveyed our roads back in the 1820’s..
Jannette was a “noted teacher of voice culture and elocution” . Her headstone is that of a granite carved tree stump.
If anyone has more information on who placed the headstone for Jannette or on Black Prince let me know. Sue
Thompson, Enfield Town Historian – historian@townofenfield.org
Don’t forget to check out all the historical information from the town that I have placed on the laserfiche site of the
county. https://lfweb.tompkins-co.org/WebLink/?dbid=5&repo=Enfield
