Enfield Community Currents
Brought to you by the Enfield Community Council
2019 June-September Free
The perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze
is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.
James Dent
Hello Enfielders,
Summer is here and lots of activities are available in our area. There is
hiking, camping, swimming, boating, fireworks, picnics, movies, plays, yard
sales, and the list goes on and on…. Get out there and enjoy. To help out the
cause, here is a list of local firework shows:
July 3rd- Stewart Park in Ithaca
July 4th- Clute Park in Watkins Glen
Memorial Stadium in Corning
July 5th- Myers Park in Lansing
Candor (no further information)
July 6th- Inn at Taughannock in Trumansburg
Americana Vineyards in Trumansburg
Groton (no further information)
For those of you who are doing your own fireworks, be safe! Follow the
directions, secure the area, be prepared for fire, and BE SAFE! Better still, just
go see some professional fireworks. Every year we hear about accidents that
occurred at home displays (or near accidents). For those of you with pets,
leave them home. I hear about lost dogs every year also. They get frightened
by the noise and take off. Last year at least one dog swam across Cayuga
Lake.
Our pilot for the Ping Pong Drop done at the Harvest Festival has sold his
plane. We are currently looking for a new pilot, but may have to cancel the Ping
Pong Drop. If you are a pilot and would like to bring joy to Enfield children,
contact one of the ECC board members listed to the left.
Have a safe and happy summer,

Could You Help Send an Enfield Youth to Camp?
Over 70% of our campers come from local low-income families. We try not to turn away any child who wants to partici-
pate in our programs. We have gotten many more requests for help in paying for our summer camp the last 3 years so
the Enfield Community Council is starting a scholarship fund to meet this need in our community. The 6 -week camp
season base fee is $405.00 per child; that’s $67.50 a week.
Your donation of $445.00 will allow 1 camper to:
Participate in arts, science, sports, and craft activities.
Swim daily at Treman Park, opportunities for hiking, creek exploration, playground time
Go on many field trips that are scheduled: Taughannock Park, Greenwood Lake State Park, Watkins Glen swim pool,
Sciencenter, Hangar Theater, bowling
Have a healthy breakfast, hot lunches and bag lunches for field trips
Make new friends, play outdoors, have fun and be safe
The Enfield Community Council is a 501 C -3 not for profit organization - Your donations are tax-deductible.
Please make checks/money orders payable to Enfield Community Council, 168 Enfield Main Road, Suite 11, Ithaca, NY
14850. Please note “Camper Scholarship” in the memo line
Thank you for your support of the Enfield youth,

School/Community Connections
Our passionate PTA continues to develop incredible programming for our community. We just wrapped up the wildly
successful Dino Night and had a family Dance in February. In a couple weeks, we will launch our Marathon Miles
running program. Students will run/walk every day around our school to accumulate miles toward a total distance of a
marathon by the end of the year. Come join us!
We collect Box Tops for Education. Here is the site for participating products https://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/
participating-products that have Box Tops. If you have some, Judy Fernandes in our main office will gladly take them off
your hands.
The PTA is running a fundraiser through IthaCan (614 Elmira Road). Bring them your returnable containers and let
them know you are donating the returns to Enfield Elementary School.
Please check out their website http://www.enfieldpta.org/ for continuous updates. Anyone can support the PTA through
the site, and if you have children in the school, please consider becoming a member and attending our monthly PTA
meetings on the first Monday of each month. Pizza and childcare arrives at 5:30 and the meeting starts at 6 pm.

In the Silent City of Rolfe Cemetery
Sue Thompson, Enfield Town Historian
The men who incorporated the Town of Enfield Rolfe Cemetery in 1876; Amos Lanning, James M. Lanning*, Ebenezer
Havens**, Wesley Hulse, Leonard Murray*, Squire B. Rolfe, Samuel Rolfe, Leroy H. VanKirk*, Oscar Rolfe*, Lucius
Brown Curry, Amos F. Curry, J. Owen Carman. Only four were not buried in the Cemetery* .
Ebenezer Havens** was a farmer, he lived on Applegate Road near the Cemetery. He was married to Elvira Queal
(1838 – 1913) and their children were Edward and Roszwell Havens, and Ina l. Dean (adopted). He was born in Enfield,
December 12, 1833 to Ebenezer and Melissa Tracy Havens. His parents had moved the family (included Ebenezer,
Hiel, Albert and Anne) to Dix in Schuyler County by 1855. He attended Starkey Seminary in Yates County. Ebenezer’s
first wife, Dorcas Raplee died while they were living in Starkey, Yates County 1865. By 1870 he had moved his family to
Enfield and was married to Elvira Queal. In 1870 he farmed approximately 55 acres. He was a master carpenter and
praised for his excellent work in the Town of Enfield. According to the Ithaca Daily Journal in 1896 he was in charge of
building a new barn on the Willis estate along with Martin Dunham, Ambrose Babcock and Elbert Willis.
In 1873 Ebenezer Havens was nominated by the Enfield Republican Party to run for the position of Town Supervisor.
He won the election and was Supervisor and on the Tompkins County Board fo Supervisors for one year. The town
does not have copies of the 1873 minutes, however a copy of the Tompkins County Board of Supervisors minutes
where Ebenezer’s activities were recorded can be found on the Tompkins County Clerk’s website – Laserfiche Public
Portal. According to his obituary he taught “winter school at Jacksonville and later at Enfield Falls and in other Enfield
Districts. So a rare a teacher was he that pupils followed him from one district to another thought the township”. He
held many positions in the Rolfe Cemetery Association for forty years. He was president, trustee, chairman and general
superintendent of the cemetery. He built the fence around the cemetery, cut the hay in the cemetery and did general
cleaning of the cemetery. He was president at the time of his death, December 28, 1911. According to the Rolfe Ceme-
tery Association book his wife Elvira purchased lot 42, 11 x 14 foot, for $12 from C.J. Whitney, Clerk of the Association.
If you are interested in more information on the Rolfe Cemetery, minutes and other records are on the Town of Enfield
Public archival site under Town Historian - Cemeteries: http://townofenfield.org/documents-public-laserfische/. There is
also an article on Rolfe Cemetery in July 2014 Community Currents under newsletters townofenfield.org.
