As I type this, Christmas is just a few days away. Wow what a year Carla Trenchard, Treasurer 342-1385 to have flown so fast. We should all take a moment to remember our loved ones who left and be thankful for the ones still here. What's Inside... I keep hearing (and I believe it) that family is the best present we can have this holiday season. Be Safe and Happy, Cortney Bailey Enfield Community Council Seeks New Members The Enfield Community Council is prepping for a new building and a busy year. We would like to add to our board and find Enfield people to help us with our new projects. Tell us the type of things you can help with, and we will gratefully find a place for you. Our major focus is the youth of our community. Talk to your friends, search your thoughts. Contact Deena @ 379-3420 or Cortney @ 279-4702, if you can help in any way. The Enfield Valley Grange The Enfield Valley Grange has been bustling with activity recently. Each Activity has been a great success. We thank you, our friends and neighbors here in Enfield and our surrounding areas for your support. We were able to complete the trim around our windows; better protecting them from the elements and sprucing them up a bit. In January we will be jump starting our pancake breakfasts, with our first breakfast scheduled for Janu- ary 6th from 8-11 am (note the new time). Mark your calendars for future breakfasts scheduled for February 3rd; March 3rd; April 7th; and May 5th. Our Craft Club meets on the first Sunday of each month at 1 pm. We welcome ou to join us. January 19th at 7pm the Grange will be hosting Game Night. Bring your favorite board game. We will enjoy a night of fun, fellowship, and food. Beginning January 21st from 5-7pm the Grange will host "Enfield Community Conversation." An evening of con- versation starting with a dish to pass at 5pm, followed by discussions with your neighbors and elected Town, and hopefully local Tompkins County Board of Representatives. Bring your ideas and suggestions for the betterment of the Town of Enfield. We hope to host these events the third Sunday of each month. Please bring a dish to pass along with your own table service. Our dances have been a very big success. On Saturday, February 3rd at 7pm, we will host a Swing Dance. Many of our friends come from all over Central New York and ask when the next dance will be! We are in the planning stage of a Valentines and/or St Patrick's Day event, watch for details. On May 12th we have our annual Spring Craft Show scheduled from 9am-3pm. If you would like to be a vendor, please contact Sandra Trutt at 273-4884. We have changed the night of our Grange meetings_ They are currently held the third Thursday of each month at 7pm. We would welcome you,to join us. Our Grange hall is available for rentals at a reasonable rate. If you or anyone you know are looking for a place to host your event, whether for a shower, party or reception, the Grange hall is an excellent place. Please call 594-3922 for more information. t Enfield Elementary Basketball Teams The Enfield Community Council co-sponsors the Enfield Elementary Basketball Teams with the Enfield Volunteer Fire Dept. The Girls and Boys team each have a 3`d/ 4th grade team and a 5th grade team. The coaches for the Girl's Teams are Kyle Ellis and Brendan O'Brien and the Boy's Team are Jaimy Allen and Matthew Stalher. Practices started the week of December 11th. Games start on January 20th. Once the game schedule is out it will be posted on the townofen- field.org youth programs site. Please come to some home games (at Enfield Elementary School) to support Enfield youth. Vera Howe -Strait Enfield Community Council Summer Day Camp The Enfield Community Council has a summer day camp program for children ages 4-13 years old. It is a 6 -week pro- gram that begins on July 2 and ends August 10, 2018. It will be held at the Robert Treman State Park's lower level (the North Shelter). The campers start their day at 8:45 a.m. with a cold breakfast and have activities until 11:30 which is lunchtime (except for field trips, most lunches are hot food items). The daily activities include a combination of most of the following: sports, arts, science, sewing, cooking, hiking, literacy activities, swimming, outdoor education (the last activity is for campers 9 years old and up). We have access to open fields, creeks and the playground. There will be field trips to Hangar Theater, Sciencenter, Taughannock Park, Watkins Glen, Greenwood Park, bowling and some new trips. All fees are per child and is based on resident or non-resident of the Enfield community. The Community Council is currently working on the 2018 budget so I cannot give the fees information, at present. Please know that there will be a slight increase from the 2017 fees. The Community Council is offering a prepay reduced rate for the BASE FEE ONLY( camp hours of 9:00 — 3:00). If the base fee is paid by May 31 the fee is $15 less. Completed applications and all fees are due in by June 15 to guarantee space at camp If you currently receive temporary assistance or need help with the cost of childca*"y"ou may be eligible for assistance through DSS. Alice Linton, Enfiieki Town'Clerk 1=rom-Code Enforcement 2017 has been a busy -year with code =enforcement with many new projects in Enfield, the biggest ones being the Dollar General store and the s©larfarm on Mecklenburg Road. The Dollar General store -opened this fall bringing new shopping choices.to Enfield and saving residents trips to Ithaca for basic shopping needs. The Mecklenburg Road solar farm is=schedtiled -to go--online-by the end of this year bringing the total number of large scale solar projects in Enfield to three with one more planned to be built on Podunk Road. Alan Teeter Code Enforcement"Officer - r= rs �o V Enfield History Update by Sue Thompson, Enfield Town Historian--historian{a)townofenfield.orq Enfield Center School Pupils Stage Walkout Sue Thompson, Enfield Town Historian On May 3, 1937 fifteen children -in the Enfield Center School, refused to return to classes because the contracts of their two teachers had not been renewed. The done pupil who returned to class was son of Miss Mabel Sheffield, who with Miss Martha Patterson was refused contracts for next year by the board of trustees. Charles VanGorder and Gordon Stark leaders of the strike said they would circulate petitions and present them at a school district meeting. Alan Rumsey a member of the board of trustees, called the parents of the striking pupils and warned them that unless the children returned to their classes he would be obligedto take drastic measures. Tuesday morning,- however, found the pupils still absent from their classroom. The strike ended=May 5- -with stodents:returning to classes and the announcement by the district trustees that they were standing pat on their selection of -two new teachers. The strike followed refusal of Trustees Alan Rumsey and Leroy Whittaker to consider a petition Signed by 29 taxpayers asking reinstatement of Mrs. Bertha Patterson and Mrs. Mabel Sheffield as teachers. The trustees said contracts had already been signed with May Savercool and Mrs. -Alice Clawson.
