Get ready to Bundle up—fall is giving way to blustery winter!
You’ve heard that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas? Well - what
comes from Mecklenburg, stays in Mecklenburg. My friend, Liz Coates, very
graciously donated the top for this year’s Harvest Festival quilt and one of my
other Mecklenburg friends, Karen Allen, won the quilt on a ticket that I sold her.
Honest—I had nothing to do with the drawing! Karen’s husband, David, figures
that this $5 ticket will cost him around $1800-2000, what with a new paint job,
new curtains, and probably a new rug. Yeah, he figures about $2000! Karen
swears that she had been shopping for a new bedspread and is thrilled with the
quilt. How’s that for serendipity? Many thanks to Monica Knight of the Tompkins
Weekly for her great coverage of the Enfield Harvest Festival.
The long, warm fall is haltingly coming to an end and the holiday season
is fast upon us. You have no excuse not to have your gardening and outside
chores done but, if you’re like me, there is still more to do. Please, just a few
more warm days….
The editor wouldn’t wait for me to do this from the Jersey Shore on my
Thanksgiving trip so there is no travel color for this edition. I’m going to imagine
it, though. Lots of wonderful food with a New Jersey twist (what will that be?), a
trip to the Statue of Liberty at the request of Theo, the 9 year old. I got my $10
Lifetime Geezer pass today from Hector. Seriously, if you’re over 62, free
admission to any National Park plus three others in your party!! Check it out at
www.nps.gov . We’ll also take in the Cornell/Colgate hockey game at the
Prudential Center in Newark. That should exhaust me on my upcoming trip. I’ll
also be collecting lots of holly and boxwood, which grows wild down there, for
the upcoming holiday decorations.
And lastly, a heartfelt thank you to the Town Board for my nomination as
volunteer of the month. I am so very appreciative of the designation. Again, my
many thanks to all the people who had a part in this. It means a lot to me.
~ Ann Rider, Interim ECC President
Harvest Festival Results:

Harvest Festival 2011 Quilt
We already have next year’s quilt top:
a beautiful appliquéd top in bright Amish-
type colors to be hand-quilted by our
community. The organizational meeting will
be Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.
at the home of Ann Rider, 77 Halseyville
Rd.
You do not need many sewing skills,
but you need to be at least 11 years of age
and have an interest in learning to quilt and
getting to know other people in our
community. We have several skilled
quilters in our community who will guide us
through this process. For more information

Enfield School Age Program
The Enfield School Age Program currently has openings.
For further information please contact Colleen
at 274-2368 between 2:00-5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday
The children have been busy with presenters, sports and outdoor
education programs, besides the daily activities offered.
The presentation topics have been learning about the Hindi culture and
learning basic Spanish words from the Asian program at Cornell, and EYES
from Cornell, with a focus on science. We have had visitors from the Finger
Lakes Independent Center talking to us about differences and similarities in
people with and without various disabilities .
Each day the children have the option of playing organized sports
activities and tournaments; we have even had athletes from the basketball and
tennis teams at Cornell visit, and a visit from the Ithaca Youth Bureau to play
indoor soccer. Other programs include the Outdoor/Nature Program where the
children have learned about different plants, trees, camouflaging, and building
shelters.
In between the above choices the children get to play outdoors daily,
free play or organized gym time, computer time, free play in cafeteria (crafts,
reading, building, board games, socializing with friends). During the group times
the children have learned two new poems, focused on the topics of making
friends and getting to know each other, golf, hockey, skateboarding, and
soccer. As one of our community projects we wrote Thanksgiving cards to
troops overseas.
Future topics are the gift of giving, pets, rain forest animals, and cars
(racing, antiques). We are working on the possibility of future presenters from
the SPCA, Cayuga Nature Center, local musicians, and college athletic teams.
We, at the School Age Program, plan to stay busy throughout the winter
months, hope you do too!

Youth Programs!!!
By Beth Bannister, Enfield Youth Program Manager
This Fall:
Autumn has been busy for the Enfield youth who have attended Enfield Community Council’s Youth Programs—
Magic and Juggling, Primitive Pursuits, Wacky Wednesdays, as well as our new program, Geocaching and Photography.
This program gives youth a chance to get to know the Enfield Community, through the lens of a camera. We received a
grant to fund this program, and will be having a gallery of all the great photography from in and around Enfield, in
December! Young people were also very active in preparing for and helping at the Harvest Festival—helping with set-up,
games, activities, and clean up at the festival itself. Many youth helped with the Enfield Halloween Party as well, leading
games and hosting creepy ‘autopsy table’.
Check out upcoming Winter Programs:
Enfield Youth and Families can contact me if you would like more information on any of these future programs. Most

There’s still time to get your
child’s application in for the Ithaca
City School District PreKindergarten
Program for the 2010-11 academic
year.
Developed to meet the learning
needs of preschoolers, the Pre-K
Program supports children’s social-
emotional, cognitive, physical and
language/literacy development and
learning. Children attend Pre-K at
Enfield School Monday through
Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and
Friday 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. and get
the experiences they need to be
ready for kindergarten.

is eligible for Pre-K. Priority is given
to children who will be 4 by
December 1, 2010 and children who
are eligible for free and reduced
lunch.
To get an application or more
information, either inquire at the
Enfield School office, or go to the

CityVan: A Rider’s
Perspective
Have you used CityVan? It is the
newest public transportation
option in Enfield and Newfield with service to
Ithaca.
Newfield resident Gloria is one of many
satisfied CityVan riders. “CityVan has been such
a wonderful program for me. I was always
wondering when such a program as this would be available in our community
and it has helped me out tremendously. I was able to keep my job in Ithaca
when my car broke down. And I was still able to get to other places like the
store—plus the price is amazing! The driver, Paul, is so pleasant and kind. I
hope that others find CityVan as great a resource as it has been for me.”
CityVan service takes people between the Towns of Newfield and
Enfield to Downtown Ithaca and also directly to Cayuga Medical Center, plus
medical offices within the CMC medical complex on Dates Drive. CityVan can
be used for in-town trips in Newfield and Enfield too. The price of a one way ride
for an adult from Enfield or Newfield to Ithaca or Cayuga Medical Center is
$3.00.
CityVan riders use the service to get to work, shopping, appointments,
volunteering, and just coming into Ithaca for fun. CityVan Driver Paul enjoys
getting to know his riders and helping folks get to where they need to go. To
his riders, he says “We are happy to see you and don’t be bashful about calling
us for a ride.”
See for yourself why CityVan is a great transportation resource! A
CityVan ride is made by calling Ithaca Dispatch at 277-7777 the night before to
schedule your trip. Remember to say that you are calling to schedule a CityVan
ride so the dispatcher will know that you are not calling for a taxi and schedule
your round trip ride on CityVan. CityVan is available from early morning to early
evening on weekdays, Monday thru Friday. For more information on CityVan,
call Ithaca Dispatch at 277-7777 or go to www.cityvan.weebly.com .
Enfield Ladies Auxiliary News
The Ladies of the Enfield Ladies Auxiliary have had a very busy summer. In June, Judy Hetherington was
elected 1 st Vice President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Central New York Firemen’s Association. In August, Pam
Whittaker was elected to the office of President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New
York.
We were in charge of the Cake Wheel for the Community Councils Harvest Festival on Sept. 25. All money’s
taken in from this booth went directly to the Community Council; each member of the auxiliary were responsible to bring
in at least two cakes to make this project a success.
September brought another surprise for Pam Whittaker by being selected as the first recipient of the Volunteer
of the Quarter by the Town of Enfield. This was such a popular idea that the Town Board changed it to a Monthly
recognition program. In October, Ann Rider was selected as the Volunteer of the Month.
We have had our election of our new officers for the coming year. President: Denise Hubbell, Vice President:
Judy Hetherington, Secretary: Sue Howser, Treasurer: Carol Barriere, and Conductress: Helen Hetherington. Past
Presidents Linda Stilwell and Pam Whittaker installed them at the November meeting.
At our November meeting it is was decided to join with the Fire Department to help fund the Enfield School
Holiday Project. We also will be collecting food goods at the annual Banquet to donate to for that Project. We also
welcomed two new members to our group, Barbara Masser and Terry Haskin.
On January 9 th 2011, the Chicken BBQ’s will begin at the Fire House. The auxiliary will be holding their bake
sale and also will have two-year planners on sale. We will also be helping the firemen prepare the food for the BBQ’s
and help with serving to the community.
If you would like information on the Auxiliary or would like to join our group, please feel free to contact any of the
officers or members. We are always looking for ladies to join us to support the community and the Fire Department.

House Story
by Sue Thompson, Enfield Town Historian
What did you say? You heard whispering in your house - but
was it the wind or is it your own home telling you stories of who
lived there? Did it say that the Ervay quadruplets of 1855 were born
there, or that the music from the Exorcist was created right in your
living room, or many children learned their ABC’s in your kitchen
because it was a school, or that “Aunt Becky”, a well known Civil
War nurse, lived in your home with her father and mother? When
was your home built and by whom? Who lived in it through the
years? How were they connected to the community?
The Municipal Historians of Tompkins County have started a
“House Story” project to preserve your house history. You do not
need to live in an older home - or an historic house - to participate.
The project is documenting your house now so the next occupant
will know its history. The major part of the project involves a “House
Tag”. The tag asks for your address, today’s date, date of
purchase, current owner, names of residents, who built the house
and a list of others who have owned the house. It also suggests
additional items you could attach to the tag for a more detailed
description of your home. After filling the tag out it is suggested that
you store the tag in a space where it can be found by the next
owner such as near the main fuse box. It is also suggested that you
send a copy of the material to your Town Historian, Sue Thompson,
and Historic Ithaca.
You can pick up one of these House Tags, which are free, at
the Enfield Town Hall. Also with the house tag you may pick up:
· Detailed two-page form for homeowners, making it easy to
record changes to a property (adding of a room, a new roof or major
renovation) and the surrounding neighborhood.
· How To Research Your House History
· Books for Tompkins county Home Public History Project
The forms may also be found on the Historic Ithaca website
www.historicithaca.org. The website provides information about
upcoming workshops or how to request a "house tag" so
homeowners can begin genealogy projects for their home.

Beautification Committee
The Beautification Committee has been very
busy this summer and fall sprucing up the looks
of the Town. This is due, through a small part, to
the monies from our County hotel room tax. The
Town, several years ago, applied for some of
this money and over the years, significant
improvements are evident. Actual funds
expended by the Town are reimbursed from this
fund and we match the funding with donations of
resident’s time and services. So, this
improvement to our community comes at no cost
to the residents. This year we hired a pair of
strong, young arms: Trent Lucas, a young man
with deep ties in the community, has weeded,
mulched, weeded some more, weed-whacked,
weeded some more (he’s always amazed at how
fast the weeds grow back), planted spirea
bushes at the bus stop and weeded some more.
If we get the pink (of course!) glacial erratic in
front of the Welcome sign before snow, I’ll be
well satisfied.
After beautiful petunias this summer in the
barrels, we had gorgeous chrysanthemums this
fall. We have new holiday banners and will be
looking forward to a holiday touch to the barrels
through the center of town. Many thanks to Roy
Barriere for helping us do the ladder work on all
our installations. And the utmost thanks to
Highway Superintendent Buddy Rollins and his
crew for dumping gravel at the bus stop, filling
the pot holes, leveling out the parking area and
brush-hogging around it so residents have a
larger, safer place to park - a nice bonus is that
there’s even an area where signs can be placed
without threat of them falling. There are regularly
12-15+ cars parked here during the day.
Ideas for other improvements can be made
to a committee member, Helen Hetherington,
273-6699, Ann Rider, 277-3478 or Debbie
Teeter, 277-4547. Better yet-join our committee.
We’ll be meeting in March to plan next year.
