Economy in Food Only Part of
Our Duty,He Says Refresh-
ments and Night Banquets
Should Go Wholesome Living
Will Help All.
In a notable address before the
Rotary Club yesterday Liberty Hyde
Bailey made a plea for simplicity In
living, economy in the use of food
and the elimination of the desire for
"the things that we ought not to
want."
Mr.Bailey repeated that we must
be "stripped for the running. Now Is
no time for useless baggage,round-
about methods, and mental impedi-menta.We must get back to the es-
sentials,keping only those activities
that count,in order that we may re-
lease all our energy for the greattaskbeforeus. We must get back to
simplicity,frugality,directness.We
shall be Wealthier,happier and more
prosperous if we do,and we shall be
more able to help win the war.We
should practice economy In food and
make the necessary substitutions so
far as we can,but we should now gofartherthanthis. To use a good
medical phrase,--we must treat our
incapacity by a process of .elimina-
tion.Probably more than half the
people live on this basis already."What to do
1.Eliminate course meals.Two
courses are sufficient,the meal Itself
and the desert;and it would not be
difficult to combine these into one.In
particular,do away with the separate
soup course and the preliminariesthereto. The ordinary thin-wat-er
soup service is of no consequence,
being merely a concession to custom
dictated by fashion. If soup Is to be
used, let it be a soup for sustenance
with real substance and in sufficient
quantity to be made a regular part of
the meal, taking the place of meat or
other substantial dish.This was the
former custom,before the French
menu came in,and Is the custom yet
witfa those who live close to the
necessities.
2.Eliminate all appetizers and
palate-tickle-rs and the expensive
reali8b.es.A good appetite is not
made by such things as these, but
by honest hunger.If one,being well,
cannot eat without such stimulators
of appetite,one would better forego
the trouble.
3.Eliminate the desire for mere
variety, that makes so much work for
the housewife and adds so much to
the bills.A certain change one may
wellfcave, but much of .the search for
variety goes beyond all reason and is
the result of pampered habit.A few
plain essentials,well cooked and in
sufficient quantity,are much to be
desired over knick-knac-ks and mere
novelties.The keener the search for
variety, that one may avoid a repeti-
tion within the week, the greater is
the likelihood that many inedible
things will be introduced into the
fare.
Ban on Refreshments and Teas
4.Eliminate all afternoon teas.
5.Eliminate all evening social re-
freshments and niKht hmnnot.
These things are merely con 'on to
custom--They are not founded In any
necessity.Night banquets are an aoo-minati-
In this twentieth century
we should be able to come together
socially without being fed.
Mr.Bailey said that while we were
about it,we should eliminate half
the silver and other trinkets that we
are In the habifof finding places for
on the table and elsewhere.This
would dispose of much labor, save ex-
pense,and contribute to peace of
mind.Surprising is the amount of
good Ingenuity expended in trying to
find a reason for making a new de-
vice in trifling table-furnishi-ng and
gewgaws.These things are confus-
ingly,in evidence at Christmas time.
If expended in the wholesome arts
of life,this ingenuity might contri-
bute much to real accomplishment.
These superfluities are one with bric-a-br-ac
and all the irrelevant things
by which we obscure and prevent the
exercise of real art.
War 13 probably never justified In
civilized society (If such society ex-
ists),yet good results may come
from it.Maybe one of the results of
this war will be the forcing of the
people back to plain wholesome liv-
ing and the eliminating of desire for
the things that we ought not to want.

There is one sure way that has never
failed to remove dandruff at once, and
that is to dissolve it,then you destroy it
entirely. To do this, just get about four
ounces of plain,common liquid arvon
from any drug store (this is all you will
need),apply it at night when retiring;use enough to moisten the scalp and rub
it in gently with the finger tips.
By morning, most if not all,of yourdandruffwillbegone, and three or four
more applications will completely dis-
solve and entirely destroy every single
sign and trace of it,no matter how much
dandruff you may have.
