How Did the Enfield 1903 Quilt Travel to California By Sue Thompson, Enfield Historian, March 2013 Reverend James Shoesmith was born in September 1858 in England. He immigrated to United States in 1874. He married Adelaide Bassett and in 1876. In 1892 NY state census he was listed as a Minister. He was a minister in the New York State towns, New Baltimore, Copenhagen, Harrisburg, Reading, Enfield, and Ludingtonville. In 1902 he accepted the call as pastor for the Enfield Baptist Church, Enfield, NY. He was active in the town along with his wife Adelaide (Addie) who was involved in the Ladies Aid Society. He stayed until May, 1904, moved on to Baptist church near Albany, NY. He died on 6 Jul 1914 at the age of 55 taken ill with pneumonia and Bright's disease. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Wilna, Jefferson, New York, United States. Adelaide Bassett Shoesmith was born September 28, 1857 at Holland Patent, near Utica. She lived with her daughter Rosa Harrington in Syracuse after James died. She died July 31, 1924 and is buried next to her husband at the Fairview Cemetery. James and Addie had 3 daughters: Bertha E. Shoesmith, born in 1877 in New York State. September 14, 1899 she married Everett S. Jones of Copenhagen, NY. Her father performed the marriage ceremony for the couple. According to the Ithaca Daily News and Journal and Republican Lowville, NY during 1903 while here parents were in Enfield. She died in 1958 at the age of 81 and is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Wilna, Jefferson, New York, United States. Lena C. Shoesmith was born in 1880 in New York. She married Herbert Tyner of Syracuse (March 20, 1876 – April 1952). They had a daughter Earelle (Earett) (1902 – 1944). Lena died May 1952 at the age of 72 in Syracuse, New York. Rosa (Rosabelle) Shoesmith, November 24, 1885, New York State. In January 1904, Rosa was employed as a clerk in Colcord's dry goods store, Ithaca. She became ill during that time in her home in West Mill street, Ithaca, being threatened with pneumonia. Her mother Mrs. James Shoesmith of Enfield Center, cared for her during this time. (Ithaca Daily News January 25, 1904) She married on January 4, 1911 Ralph Burr Harrington (October 20, 1884) in Delaware County, NY. The couple lived in Syracuse, NY until between 1925 and 1930. In 1930 they were listed as living in Huntington Park, Los Angeles, California. Ralph worked in the Rubber manufacturing area and Rosa was manager of an apartment house. They owned the house that they lived in. In 1940 Ralph ran his own business involved as a precision grinder, Rosa was not listed as having any occupation. During some point in Rosa’s life she completed 3 years of college education. Ralph died on September 4, 1962 in Orange, California. Rosa died May 4, 1965 in Los Angeles, California. There were no children listed in the census with them. The Shoesmith/Harrington family story, may explain how the 1903 Enfield quilt came to California. One could assume that Rosa inherited the quilt after her mother died in 1924, since her mother was living with the couple in Syracuse when she died. Rosa and Ralph then moved on to California.
