Recollections (of particular interest are the fates of buildings now gone, group
photographs, teaching methods, games played, lunch time activities, disciplines
used, holiday observances etc.) : —Act++al iv. wP had a Pretty good t imp in schnn'
Maior holidays were observed with entertainments of various sorts. We did nlays. sroke
"pieces" usuallv poems. and on Childrens Dav and Fourth o` July we had the festival
at the Baptist Church but the participants were the same, and we got drilled and
rehearsed for several weeks ahead so we would be good. I usually got a lone, part in the
Dlays because I could memorize quickly.
On the day that school let out for the summer, we always had a picnic, often at
Enfield Falls. It was a large event in our small-town lives.
At school, we saluted the flag, and recited the Pledee of Allegiance every morning
and also recited the Lord's Praver and the 23rd psalm. If we had all been reasonably
well behaved and cooperative. our teacher read a chanter or two of a book to us .
_right after lunch. I especially remember Anne of Green Gables. You brought vour lunch
with vou, or went home if you lived within a block or so of the schoolhouse. There.
were a couple of kids, who shall be nameless. who stole lunches. Thev were punished
the first couple of times. but when our teacher realized that the- didn't have anv food,
he brought enough extra from home for them In the winter wP ronld hryav nor s1Pt.&-
and take our chances with the traffic at the intPrsection.. When it was rPally bad out
we played games around the stnve in the middle of the rnnm.
Onr ;nstr,,rtinn was excellent_ T learn Pd mnre in that nne room than in anv ray,.
_.,LQhnnl T PvPr attPndPd. RPQidP the three RC wo wPrP taught cpno, aphy History and
some nat„ral sr;PnrP. with field trips in the fall. Once a week we had a session of music
--Qpd art appreciation. At recesses we ran arm and hard enough to satisfv the PE
rea+ir m n s, There were Regents Exams to opt in o high school_ as wP11 as t_n grad ate
from it. T don't recall a single student who didn't get to high school from tla_
Enfield school, and don't recall anvone who failed to graduate in good time.
We en_ioved the services of the Tompkins Co. Travelling Library truck. and always had
lots of books. My favorites were the old red Ronks of Knowledge. and I read every ope
of them. Discipline waA_aaways strict_ The nenalfy fit the individual_ Whippings
were administered in some cases but T don't recall any noise ahnnh civil rights When
I was bad, I had to stay after school and do extra arithmetic, which I hated anvway. buff
I credit those sessions with making me a good general mathematician.
