HomeMy WebLinkAboutLovell Family genealogy 5He was born in a log cabin 12 miles east of Phillips on the Big Elk River. Attended a one room school on the homestead to about the 6th grade. Worked as a "Flunkie" in the logging camps; as a guide for hunters from the cities; and as a market hunter, shooting grouse to be shipped, in barrels on the railroad to Milwaukee and Chicago. He told stories about the cold winters and the snow blowing through the cracks between the logs and across his bed. He left home early and worked in the woods at various jobs. He went to work for a steel bridge crew and after that job was completed, moved to Chicago with the same company to build steel fire escapes on the "skyscrapers" and steel bridges in Illinois and Wisconsin. He was helping to build a 2 span steel bridge across Sugar River in South Western Bock County when he met his wife -to -be. In the construction of that bridge, a set of round steel caissons were placed in the center of the river for the piers for the two spans to set on where they joined. Engineers had made the measurements of the caissons, but when they seemed to be too tall, someone suggested cutting them shorter. Everything looked good until the total weight of the steel bridge and decking was in place. Then the center piers settled into place, making a sag in the middle of the bridge. His family joked about that bridge every time they crossed it and it was all "his fault that it sunk. That bridge lasted for 50 .years before a relocation of the road required a new bridge. He farmed for 10 years in that part of Rock County before moving to Beloit where he worked as a machinist for many years. A copy of Melvin Newton Lovell's will is on the following page.. DIED: Sept 8, 1968, The Dalles, Oregon. BURIED: 1968, Lakeside Cemetery, Phillips, Wisconsin. She was the 5th one born in the log cabin 12 miles east of Phillips on the Big Elk River. Attended a one room school next to the homestead but never graduated from the 8th grade. Told me (BBL) several stories about life on the farm and how poor they were. Her father counted all of the ammunition when they went hunting and each shot had to be accounted for. If you shot at a "mark', you had to say you shot at game and missed. Some winters they would go barefoot in the snow to the neighbors 1/4 mile away. The children would heat a board or "shingle° behind the stove before they started. The board was tucked inside their coat until their feet got cold. Then the board was placed on the ground where they stood on it until their feet warmed and then went on their way. They also had a mule that would play "Pony Express" with three of them. Each one had to mount and dismount on the run as the mule would wheel and go back to the starting point. It made a rotation game with one riding and one on each end of the run. When the mule got tired, it just stopped and the game ended. There was no bridle or saddle on the mule when they played. She hunted deer and grouse along with the rest of the family during the hunting season. The trail to the homestead was suitable for a wagon or buggy by 1905, and late one afternoon, Mable was driving home from Phillips when a wolf jumped out of the brush at her horse. Mable whipped up the horse and got away from the wolf. Her dad got her a 32-20 Marlin rifle to carry when she went to town after that. (This story is in the files of the paper in Phillips.) Mable saw the need of a good mid -wife, maternity home and practical nurse. She started practicing about 1925 in St. Paul Park, Minnesota. About 1933-4 she started a maternity home in Phillips, Wisconsin, and worked until 1954 when she retired. MARRIED: Frank R. Dyke, July 27, 1910, Worcester Twp., Price, Co., Wis. DIED: Mar 11, 196', Sandusky, Ohio. BURIED: 1969, Lakeside Cemetery, Phillips, Wisconsin. 74 Fred was the sixth child born in a log cabin about 12 miles east of Phillips, Wisconsin on the Big Elk River. He attended a one room school but never graduated from the eighth grade. As a young man he worked in the logging camps, starting at about age 9 by carrying water for the cooks. Later he worked with his father as a guide during grouse and deer hunting seasons. As his older brothers and sisters left home, it became more difficult for him to help the family. Any Job was accepted. Fred married Johanna, a Phillips girl he had met at the Methodist Church. It was an eight year courtship before they could afford to marry. A home was purchased in Phillips and'Fred worked at the sawmill. Here he learned to weld. When the mill closed during the "Big Depression" (1929-1934), he moved to Beloit, Wisconsin where he worked at Fairbanks, Morse and Co., the same place his brother, Melvin worked. In 1936 he went to the Beloit Iron Works as Superintendent of the welding shop. During WW II he taught welding at Beloit Vocational School in the evenings. Fred retired early to his home in Phillips and built a cabin on Wilson Lake where he enjoyed nearly 20 years of fishing. The winters were spent in Texas, Virginia and Ohio where he visited his son and daughter. Seeing his son and daughter graduate from college was a dream come true. He had an independent nature,,and liked to "kid" and tease. His family always came first. He suffered a stroke and spent 3 years in Ohio with his daughter and son and even when he +couldn't walk, he could always tell a funny story, !MARRIED: CHILDREN: 15.7 15.8 14.12 (This information from his daughter, Carolyn) Johanna Gina Anderson, June 7, 1919, Ashland, Wisconsin. MAYNARD LOVELL COMMITS SUICIDE- Last Friday Maynard Lovell, a student of the Buffalo Normal, committed suicide by suffocation with illuminating gas. Mr. Lovell was 22 years old, a resident of Perr City, where his father carries on a blacksmithing business. He was a graduate of the Trumansburg High School and Training Class. This was his first year in the Normal but on account of his record and standing he was credited with two years work. He was, a diligent student, had just passed all of his examinations in a very creditable manner, rating 95 or over on every subject. Not appearing at dinner on Friday he was sought for at his room where he was found dead. Over his head was four thicknesses of a heavy blanket under which was a tube leading from a gas fixture. Undoubtly he was suffering from overwork as no known cause existed why he should have committed the rash act. He was a young man of exemplary habits, bound to acquire an education through his own exertions. We understand that he .,las prominent in his class and elected for president next year. He also had a flattering offer of a position in the school. It does not appear that he was .financially embarrassed, he had a balance in the bank. His sad end cast a gloom over the community where he lived and was best known. The funeral was from the home in Perry City, Tuesday. lARR 1 ED : 14.20 BORN: DIED: BURIED: WILLIAM EDMUND LOVELL -;Son of Edmund WiiIiam & Christine (Hall) Lovell 13.36).
