Abraham grew up in the vicinity of Byram Twp., Sussex Co., New Jersey. He
went to Enfield, Tompkins Co., New York in 1804 when his father claimed his
"Soldier's Right" land. Abraham bought land there, married and started raising
a family. History of Venancio County.. Penn. 1890, Venanqo County. Penn.. Her
Pioneers and Peoole. 1919 and Susouicentennial. Pleasantville. Venango County.,
Penn.. 1821-1971 are books that tell about Abraham Lovell coming to that area.
All the stories are about the same, saying he was a man who roamed and visited
various localities in Northeastern Pennsylvania. During his service in the War
of 1812, tie was attracted to a section now known as Pleasantville, Pennsylvania.
In 1819, he moved his family in a covered wagon which continued to provide them
with shelter until a permanent dwelling could be erected. (Their house was
built over a spring so domestic water was always available.) The listed books
mention ten children, but Abraham's Will names only nine. The Land and Deed
records for Tompkins Co., N.Y. show Abraham and Elizabeth selling their land in
1819. Their daughter, Elizabeth,is listed as being born in Pleasantville area
in 1819. Tax records from 1823-1864 on file in the Court House at Franklin,
Penn., list lands, livestock and a "Pleasure Wagon: belonging to Abraham.

Moses Lovell
was a soldier in the War of 1812 against Great Britian.
In
the volume Papers
and Affidavits filed for Bounty Lands and Widows Pens 1.06.
following information
was extracted:
Corporal Moses
Lovell, Company of Captain Richard Ely, Regiment of Detached
Militia, Commanded
by.,Col.A.•`Smith of N.Y. Militia, was drafted at Enfield
in
March of 1814
for a:3 month duration. He then was enrolled at Waterloo, Seneca
Co., N.Y. and
from there marched with his company under the command of
his officers
to Williamsville, N.Y. He was mustered into the service there
and
marched to Blackrock:on
he Niagara River by officers appointed for that
purpose. This
area.was.calIed the Niagara Frontier then. He was discharged
at
5
Williamsville and returned home. He must have applied for mileage of some kind,
because he filed an affidavit stating °The distance between those points is more
than one hundred miles', and after discharge he returned another hundred miles.
His papers state he was mustered in March 20, 1814 and discharged April 17, 1814
for a total time of 27 days. During that time he must have traveled almost 300
miles even by present road maps, and who knows if there were even roads to use,
The Dundee Record states in part --- 'In May 1804 he came with his father
to Enfield then part of Ulysses.---' Land records in the Sussex Co., Courthouse
at Newton, New Jersey show Asahel and Hannah Lovell selling property in Byram
Twp. on May 24, 1804. It is the compilers belief that this is the time the
complete family of Asahel, Hannah and 10 children, with one married, loaded
their wagons and migrated enmass to Enfield. Various records list all of them
spending their early years in or close by Enfield. Most of the family were
married in the area and many are buried in the many scattered cemeteries. Moses
and some of his family moved to the Newfane-Lockport, Niagara Co., N.Y. area
about 1853 where he spent the rest .of his life. In the courthouse at Lockport,
N.Y., in the Surrogates Office are records dated June 29$ 18779 L-6, Vol. 16,
page 154, Schedule 'F" This record contains the names of all persons entitled
(as widow Legatee or next of Kin to the deceased) to a share of his estate with
the names and places of residence.

Mrs. Benedict was the oldest of a'family of Eight* Children and the
daughter of Abram Lovell, one of the early pioneers of this place. She was born
in Tompkins Co., N.Y. Jan 26, 1808 and carne to Pleasantville with her parents at
an early age. At the age of 17 she was 'married to Anson Benedict. To them five
children were born, three of whom died in infancy. Joseph C. the oldest son
died in Pleasantville a year ago, and Moses C. the only surviving child is now a
resident of Oil City. Mrs. Benedict made Pleasantville her home up to about
three years ago, when she went to Oil City to live with her son Miles C.
Benedict**. For seventy-seven years Mrs. Benedict has been a member of the
Methodist Church in good standing- a most remarkable record- she having become a
member of the first society of that denomination organized in this section of
the country. She was ever faithful in her attendance upon the means of grace
until prevented by the decrepitude of age. Besides one son, M. C. Benedict of
Oil City, she us survived by one sister, Mrs. Shugert of Pleasantville. Her
remains were brought to Pleasantville and funeral services were held March 25th
from the home of Mrs. Shugert. Rev. Hume conducted the service assisted by
Revs. Bennehoff and Cunningham. Interment in Fairview.
* A conflict exists with the figure 8 as listed here. Mrs. Shugert-'s Obit.

BORN: Dec 7, 1809, Enfield, Tompkins Co., New York.
DIED: Oct 5, 1891, Temperance House, Allegheny Twp., Venango Co.
Penn.
BURIED: Oct 1891, Fairview Cemetery, Pleasantville, Pennsylvania.
Asahel came to the Pleasantville area in a covered wagon with his parents
in 1819 from Enfield, New York. Most of his life was spent on a farm about 4
miles east of Pleasantville where he developed and managed a hotel or
way -station. Due to his strict adherence to his religious convictions, there
were no alcoholic beverages permitted on the premises and therefore -it became
known as the Temperance House.
OBITUARYs Commerical Record, October 1891, Vol No. 17, Page 7,
Pleasantville, Pennslyvania.
ASAHEL LOVELLs
In the death of Asahel Lovell, which occurred Sunday morning, October 5,
this community loses one of its oldest landmarks and best known citizens.
His death occurred at his home at the Temperance House, where for over half a
century he has lived & been the central figure of a happy fart►ily.
13
Mr. Lovell was born in Seneca Co., New York, December 7, 1809 and was
therefore nearing the close of his 82nd year. He was one of 10* children of
Abraham Lovell, who moved from Seneca County, N.Y. in 1819, and located and
cleared a farm that is a part of the present site of Pleasantville, the house
being a log structure where the home of Henry Lockwood now stands. His son
Asahel, the subject of this notice, was twice married, his first wife being
Eliza, a daughter of Samuel Irwin, one of the pioneers of Cherrytree Township
and a sister to the late Judge Irwin. Two children were born to them. one son
who died in infancy and a daughter, Eliza, who survives her father. His second
wife was Rachel E. Allen of Crawford Co., who died in 1883 leaving one son, May
I. Lovell, now deceased.
For sixty years Mr. Lovell has been a member of the Presbyterian Church of
Pleasantville from the beginning. He possessed a never failing interest in
church and religious work, and being deeply versed in Bible history, made him a
reliable authority on questions pertaining thereto. He was a strict
disciplinarian in both family and religious matters, unswerving in what he
considered his duties toward God and man.
As the fruit of his industry the farm he has left is the model of thrift.
In the early days of oildom his homestead would have brought him fabulous sums
of money, but he refused to dispose of it, and enjoyed its peace -and comforts
uninterrupted until his end. He had been gradually failing in health for a
number of years, but the decline in the last six months was very noticeable and
his death did not come unexpected to those about him. There are but three
survivors of Mr. Lovell's family **, one daughter, Eliza, and two grandchildren,
children of the late May I. Lovell.
Wednesday morning, Oct. 7th at 11 o;ciock, the hour of the funeral, a
large gathering of friends met at his late residence to pay their respects to
the memory of their venerable friend and neighbor. Rev. Lewis of the
Presbyterian Church, paid a fitting 'tribute to the life and work of -the deceased
and the remains were deposited in the family plot in Fairview.
The Will of Asahel Lovell as recorded in the Court House at Franklin,
Penn., as transcribed from the hand written record is as follows:

Mrs. T. B. Shugert, wife of the late Dr. T. B. Shugert, died at her home
in Pleasantville, Tuesday, March 1, 1910 after an illness of but a few days.
Mrs. Shugert was born in Pleasantville September 28, 1827, and was the youngest
daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Lovell, who were among the earliest settlers
of that village. Her entire life was spent in Pleasantville and for many years
she had been a consistent member of the, M. E. Church of that place. While of a
very retiring disposition she was loved by all who knew her for her beautiful
Christian character and her ability as a true home maker. She was a remarkable
woman in many ways but her chief charm lay in the fact that while her years were
many, her heart and mind were ever young. She leaves the following children:
Mrs. James Munger of Portland, NY.; Mrs. George H. Dunham, Warren, Pa.; E. B.
Shugert, San Francisco, Cal.; Miss Minnie at home, and one grandchild, Miss
Georgie Munger.
Funeral services will be held at the family residence, Friday afternoon at

A small pamphlet published in Pleasantville in 1971 has a story that as a
child, Mrs. Shugert played with the adopted children of a Danish sea captain
that owned adjacent property to the Loveils. While playing at their horse, she
was given bits and pieces of beautiful cloth for her doll clothes. There was
something very mysterious in this man who came into the wilderness to live and
imported such valuble goods, which must have been secured on the high seas.
